Pedro Porro

Great news at a time in which fear about Vuskovic future appears to be dominating.

Pedro Porro is an excellent player for us. Always works so hard, and yes I know there have been questions about his defensive side. I think he can be better and he has the workrate and desire. He leads on the pitch with his passion. So happy he’s very likely staying here for years to come.

My thoughts as well.

I’m really pleased with this, I think there is a lot more to come from him in a balanced system, he arrived in the middle of Conte’s health issue followed by his meltdown, then was a full back being effectively asked to play as #10 in Angeball, before whatever the hell Frank and then Tudor were trying to do, and all this time he has stayed fit and available for probably 95% of matches while the rest of the squad have been crippled by injuries in the same time period.

I do like Porro and think this is good news

However I also hope, for the sake of team balance, that this is the season Spence starts to emerge to take more minutes. I think Spence is better defensively, and will also overlap Kudus/Kulu more naturally in a de Zerbi system

With the pair though, RB is by far our strongest position

Well we certainly can't play Porro more, we have absolutely abused him in last couple of seasons with overplaying.

As someone old fashioned enough to believe that a defender's main priority is to defend, I've never been entirely convinced by Porro in a back four. However, RDZ clearly wanted him to stay and plenty of people think he's good for us so I'm happy to see this as good news.

Like you I have similar concerns about his defending. I just think we have bigger fish to fry in this window, primarily in attack (change the entire frontline if possible), CB, GK and some creative midfielders.

We have great balance at both full-back positions now.

Porro & Robertson - good attacking FBs with some questions defensively

Spence and Udogie - good defensive FBs with some questions offensively

This will allow RDZ to select the best pair for the gameplan plus option to change tactics during the match.

When Spence is in a good position he can defend well. He's often not in a very good starting position and can be way too casual getting back and getting behind the ball. He's actually not a better defender than Pedro but has the potential to be if he focuses a lot harder. Spence also needs to play with a much higher intensity. Most LWs would prefer to play against Spence right now. Pedro will fight for everything and for the entire 90 mins.

The team selection is a no brainer until Spence gets his head around some of his weaknesses like far post defending. Porro isn't that innocent on that one either.

Anyway, it's great news that we have these 2 guys. Let's see the next chapter under RDZ.
