onlyme: Your amounts for Gomes(£7.8m), Dempsey(£6m) and Parker(£5.5m) are too much.

Lloris cost an initial £7.8m, rising to £11.8m. It's unclear whether this is conditional based or not. Vertonghen's max price is £9.6m depending on clauses, we paid around £8m for him.

Also I think Zeki Fryers only cost us £900k, not £3m. The former figure would make a lot more sense to me considering the length we went to to avoid paying Utd's tribunal fee, £3m for Fryers when we signed Holtby for £1.5m? I don't think that's how Levy works.

All transfer fees quoted include any potential "add-on" fees, as generally there's no way of knowing the exact details of them or whether they are ever triggered or not.

The same applies for players Spurs sell-on to other clubs, so it tends to even itself out in the end.

Our top 10 most expensive players

When you think how often Utd/City/Cheats/Goons splash out £15m or £20m or £30m or more on one player, there are some amazingly good buys there

Not all of them are stellar, but lots of them are bloody good value

Can someone dig out the top 10 costing squad members from those 4 clubs please?

Bentley, Bent and Modric?

I realise you mean current players, but its notable that these players who signed a good while ago are our most expensive signings.

However, we also have to consider the increasing importance of wages. Our wage bill has rocketed compared to before the CL season. How much has Adebayor really cost, what have we paid (or will pay) to keep Bale? The headline transfers are far from the full story.

You can make the story whatever you want.
Broke even on those players (or thereabouts).
Brilliant considering one of those players was a total flop and left on a free.
Terrible considering one of those players was a total flop and left on a free.

Jermain Defoe £15,000,000

Anyone care to hazard a guess at this lots current market value?

Ok here's my Spurs biased read on their values...

Jermain Defoe £15,000,000 now 8,000,000
Mousa Dembele £15,000,000 now 17,000,000
Hugo Lloris £11,800,000 - now 15,000,000
Jan Vertonghen £9,000,000 - now 18,000,000
Gareth Bale £7,500,000 - now 85,000,000 (fudge yeah)
Heurelho Gomes £7,000,000 - now 3,000,000
Gylfi Sigurdsson £6,800,000 - now 6,800,000
Kyle Naughton £6,000,000 - now 4,000,000 (I thought it was 6mil for a job lot of Kyles?)
Sandro £6,000,000 - now 16,000,000
Clint Dempsey £6,000,000 - now 6,000,000

Think it was 8 or 9 mil for the two Kyles. Was never really disclosed how the fee was split.

Ah right. 8-9 mil was still not too bad as its turned out.

Actually in the full list of current squad members it is hard to highlight a really bad deal in there. It just goes to show that Danny has learned from past mistakes and has bought well. Maybe Fryers and Coulibaly were a tad on the expensive side but it's still early days for those players. Khumalo was probably a bit of a waste, but not an extravagant one at 1.5 mil.

We're doing pretty well both on and off the field considering the resources of who we're up against and the upwards pressure on wages thanks to the petroclubs in recent years, but the rise in wages does show that we're really up against it unless we increase turnover. Short-term we can try to find more lucrative merchandising deals ala Liverpool, but long term either the stadium or wealthy new sugardaddies hold the biggest impacts on our future.

That's why I advocate a smaller, sleeker squad with a stronger starting XI, using our academy/'young players with potential' as our depth. Like Everton we can't really afford the fees and wages of two quality players in every position, so I'd rather have one great one than two average ones. And rotate with plenty of youngsters in the domestic cups to focus on the league for now, since getting consistent CL football could help us attract another plane of players, thus wasting fewer wages on average ones. It's not romantic, but we have be a bit realpolitik as the underdog maneuvering around behemoths.

Nice wordmongering

The difference between my estimates and yours and Statto's are not that great. I just put the details out in a slightly different form.
