This formation really gives the front 3 a break - we really only defend with 7 outfielders most of the time, whereas the 4-2-3-1 almost becomes 4-5-1 without the ball

The thing is that Dier cant play the deepest midfield role in this formation - that player needs to be quick and mobile as he has no-one around him

Nobody can, it's too much work. The closest I've seen to it working was Wanyama v City at WHL when we put 4 past them, but he was different class that day and it was a 4-1-4-1 so he was in the pocket.
