*** OMT Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool FC ***

I agree with you that we were definitely braver in some of our play. Something concerning though is that we ALWAYS try to play out from the back, even when the only pass the goalkeeper can make is a dangerous one in behind our fullback who sometimes then is facing his own goalline with two or three players converging on him. When only that ball is on then I think the keeper has to go long, at the very least that might turn the opposition as well as causing them to consider whether they continue to commit so many players to their press (Liverpool pressed us with zero consequence of an early ball in behind their high line yesterday, which meant that they had even numbers and sometimes even outnumbered us as we were trying to play it out).

Its very noble trying to always play out from the back but not particularly sensible. Especially when the opposition are overcommitting to the press as Liverpool were quite often on Sunday.

With Richy in the side, yes. With the frontline we had out there first-half, what's the point? In fact, I applaud trying to play out. The biggest issue was lack of bravery in the whole principle. You offered a great example re: Porro/Bentancur. There are so many instances of that since we beat Villa 4-0. In fact, that over-commital to the press could've been a gift for us. It's well worth debating that had Maddison started the game we might well have exploited that more.

It is where the 6 is vital in the sense of they have to take more risks, ditto I think we have some real issues with playing at pace right now (because of this partially). For me, the long ball we don't play enough are the diagonals quickly and in behinf for Johnson. With Werner out I think Ange is stuffed if he wants to accomodate Deki uptop as it renders all three forwards relatively ineffective in this system. It has to be Son on the left, Richy centre and Johnson on the right.

People putting Son on the left has me totally bemused. He doesn't cross from the byline, doesn't cut in and shoot, and doesn't defend the left side. Anyone know what his goals and assists are when playing that position this season?

They need £102M before the end of june

Maatsen has been very good but wants Dortmund who I believe can’t afford the fee
Not sure where Rhys James will go and less so with his recent, constant injuries
I think they are gonnna hawk Gallagher round to create some kind of auction and try to get rid of Sterling
There is talk of them accepting £37m for Lukaku but again, I can’t see who is paying that with his wages too

They just sold 2 hotels.

That’s included in that if I remember correctly
And the hotel sale wasnt approved by the league… yet.

Ok. Saudi Sportswashing Machine have now played the youngster they had on loan enough to trigger the £28m buy clause. They'll have to cut a few more. June 30th is tight but doable.
After that lukaku is out of contract. That must be £40-50m a year in amortisation and wages alone they save. Sterling goes to saudi they're fine.

Lukaku isn’t out of contract
He has at least a year left
They are trying to sell him for his amortised value according to the talk in Italy £37m
I don’t see an English player going to Saudi myself.. but we shall see

Hall is £24m as they already have the £4m loan fee
I think… they will bank that in this seasons numbers

Henderson went.

Reportedly 8,5m obligation to buy. Low figure because of relatively high loan price.
They are also getting £5m for the loan of the striker to Fulham
But they are literally pulling together buts here and there to try to get over the line without some real sales

They're already over the line, as the PL allowed the sale of the hotel as income counted for in the PSR.

No they haven’t
It states it in the Chelsea accounts that’s it’s subject to approval
Well I’d did according to Kieran Mckenna the football finance guy

Agreed, I think Ange has essentially said he would rather play his way and lose 3 games than change his style and get a couple of draws. This year is all about Ange seeing which players can play his way, not about points.
It might actually be a smart move in another way; if he got 4th this year and 6th next year it would be seen as regression, but if he gets 6th this year and 5th next year it will be seen as progress.

Well next year will be an influx of new players and the same questions will be asked of them.

I'm a bit confused by your answer. Did it or did it not get approved as income that is included in PSR?

I'm not talking about hitting a long ball up to Richy to hold up, I'm talking about hitting a ball over the top for Son/Johnson to get after. Liverpool were massively overcommitting to their press, leaving only two back and having those two players in our half of the pitch. A ball over the top might or might not have resulted in us having chances as a direct result but I think it definitely would've made them press less aggressively with less players committed to it and more space between their lines.

I think I'm right in saying that Ange doesn't have a core team that moves with him, he prefers to work with the coaches already at the club which feels pretty unique. So maybe he's not that way inclined to bring in specific coaches to fix things.
I don't think that has anything to do addressing areas that need fixing. If there's something that needs fixing and his staff is not equipped to fix it, I'm pretty sure he will bring someone in.

As far as his staff is concerned, I think he takes more of a "train the trainer" approach, which works because his system is not that complicated. So the ramp-up period for the assistants should be much shorter. At this stage, however, the first thing is for the players to embrace the philosophy and style of play. Once that is done, they'll work more on the smaller details, which may require additional specialist coaches to be brought in.

Understood. We're saying the same then, a quick diagonal in what I call 'the golden corridor' behind and between FB and CB. Yes. I agree. I think our inability to do this has seriously hampered Sonny recently beyond even his fatigue issues. Of course to your point of over-commital, I'd have even hap[pily settled for faster passing and bravery through it; I believe that was what Ange was screaming about first-half...
