Morgan Gibbs-White

This is what is so funny about the whole thing. 60m is absolutely the sort of starting bid that Levy would make for a player like this.

It’s also like…I know we have a good relationship with CAA. But City must do too right? Why would MGW’s agents keep the clause a secret from City (where the secrecy angle worked because NF quoted a fee higher than the clause?) but were then willing to share it with us?

Clearly if they knew it was secret enough to not tip City off, Spurs would know they would have to tread carefully too. So I can only assume we did everything above board, and just guessed right. Or got lucky with a proper low ball offer rather than an enquiry?

Maybe MGW’s agents were tinkled that City walked away after the enquiry and resolved to get their client a move this summer after that. I can see it. I just can’t see Spurs doing anything underhanded, or stupid enough that could blow back on us.
This is what Simon Jordan said. He said the absolute most Spurs would have done is ask the agent to find out what sort of money it would take for Forest to do a deal and its likely that the figure has been provided in that sort of context but as per Jordan - this is how every single club operates - including Forest.

I assume its all quiet on the transfer front due to us working hard on this deal? Would be a real shame for this to fall through as this is the first time i have been genuinely excited for a new signing in a while.

I think that's most likely.

And in a way perhaps we did something wrong, but it's something that also happens with most transfers with most clubs.

The idea that a release clause can be in a contract and kept confidential to me seems naive. To be pursuing this like they're doing I think will hurt their reputation a lot more than it does ours. And in turn will not make them more attractive to top young talents. But they're shooting us in the foot as well as us, really rather annoying.

But also as per Jordan, the "tapping up" rules are completely unworkable if deployed in the manner in which Forest want them applied. He said when at Palace theres no way on GHod's earth that hes entering into talks to close a multimillion transaction without being clear on whether the player actually wants to join you before you begin that process.

They seem to be pushing for a new contact to stop him from moving to us.

Reports are he doesn't want to sign.
Could be fun if he did as I'm sure we would complain then as they didn't accept the offer for a RC.

Saying next week now for a possible update on this.
He has been offered a double your money contract, he was offered it over a year ago and has refused to sign
He wants to leave

You're more excited by Gibbs-White than Kudus. I can't say I've seen much of G-Ws game, what is it that excites? I know he's good, was nominated for the PFA player of the year, and clearly a good addition.

I will say having continued chatting with Forest fans, one of the points they seemed fair from their point of view is that it looked like a lot of the journos with contacts at Spurs are really going hard on the release clause point. If I look at Ornstein and a couple of the other ones that would have had a line into Spurs, there is a fair argument that we were trying to make that clause clear and public in a way that would help us ram through the deal.

Eg this report here looks clearly sourced from the Spurs side: https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c15wx34g94vo

This Ornstein tweet too:
So maybe Spurs approached it as ‘if we make clear there is a release clause, there is absolutely nothing Forest can do’ and Forest initially accepted it, before their owner decided he didn’t want to be railroaded. It doesn’t look like in the above links that Forest are acknowledging the release clause and that’s why it’s public, it looks like Spurs are pushing that line.

I could be completely wrong of course. Given that we’ve now heard nothing for a couple days, I almost do feel like Forest have a point. If Spurs were completely clear here, surely we’re the ones making the complaints, or at least counter claiming, and getting on with MGW’s medical? It’s making me think the need for secrecy has some validity to it, and that MGW’s team were annoyed that Emirates Marketing Project ended up going elsewhere.

Not sure why didn't just play the game and start with a 50m bid, increase it to 55m and then 60m. Hitting the 60m would've then triggered the release clause and we just go "oh, there's a release clause, great". Something seems strange about the whole thing.

As always with these things fans just come up with a load of guesswork and assumptions because they are in the dark and know nothing.

I would say it's pretty much certain we knew what the fee was. I'm also pretty sure Levy and the players agency would have covered their tracks on this.

@DubSpur I was thinking the exact same thing the other day. In my opinion there is no chance Levy heard he had a buyout of 60m, and thought 'Ok great, let's submit a bid of 60m straight away.' Just can't see it....

Sounds to me as if whoever was involved from our side was told there was a release clause so we put in a bid for that amount. No thought as to whether or not that might be problematic.
Obviously I am as guilty now as anyone else for making assumptions based on not knowing the actual facts.

Levy? No. But he has stepped back, right?
