I had concerns pre-season that his defending ability may be exposed playing under managers who don't play a suicide high line.

Like most of our squad, MvdV is decent in a specific system but lacks the complete skillset to excel under managers who have a different playing philosophy; hence why we got him at a price point which ENIC decided was worth a punt and the elite clubs chose to purchase CBs who have better situational awareness and passing abilities so that they can dominate possession against “lesser” clubs.
Perhaps he’ll develop into such a player at a less chaotic club, which he’ll no doubt be hoping to move to this summer.

Whats become evident is he is slow on the turn, really flat footed in that respect, his pace really is the leveller for him, but his position and inability to sniff out danger are a real issue. He also hates the ball in the air, dreadful with his head or anything knocked over the top near him

give it a rest, he can’t even get into his National team in his favoured position because they rate a City B player higher than him. The guy is shocking, Porro, Romero, Vicario and VDV are the majority of whats wrong with this team.
