Medical Department

Pirate55

The Last Man Standing 17/18
Just what is up with our medical department? We seem to have a massive and increasing injury list with long term injures just taking longer and longer to get better and even seemingly innocuous ones never fully clearing up.

Lamela has had his "hip" injury for seemingly ages - over a year now I think
Rose should have been back ages ago and there still seems little progress. What exactly is wrong with him (apart from a loose mouth and little brain-power)
Wanyama was never fit enough for the Chelsea game and hasn't been heard of or seen since.
Dembele never actually fully recovers from his knee/foot injury
Edwards was seemingly unavailable for the whole of last season.

Are they doing a good job? They seem to get the team fit enough (eventually) but can't seem to adequately treat any injuries sustained. This may come back to bite us if their performance doesn't significantly improve.

Funny enough I was thinking just the same thing and thinking about doing a thread on it.

We do seem to be getting more long term injuries then in recent years. I am worrying for Wanamya now and if he is out for 6 months or so it will confirm my thoughts and suspicions that the high intensity play and strict physical fitness regime we have at the club is taking a toll on the players and making them come back from injuries slower then would otherwise be the case.

Also wondering if some players might leave to extend their careers, play an intense physical game at spurs but much like players retiring from international football will players leave us to extend their club careers when they get into their early 30's.

Kane puts a hell of a lot of running in each match and each season, I hope it does not wreck him when he gets to 30. Because as a player with his born lack of pace but footballing brain he should go on as long as Sheringham.

I think the only issue is they don't release information.

Which is fair enough.

The new thinking in athlete injuries is not to set a return date.

Recovering from an injury is all about keeping a positive attitude and mindframe to help through boring and painful sessions day after day.

Having a set back and missing your publicly announced return date doesn't help.

Have a read of journalist Rory Smith following Gundogan through his 10 month recovery from injury https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/20/sports/soccer/manchester-city-ilkay-gundogan-injury.html

As for Lamela and Rose its well documented what happened with their injuries.

I think the answer to the first question is that nothing is 'up' with our medical department.
You've cited 5 examples in a year from a squad of, what, over 30 if your including Edwards.
30 athletes who spend most days exercising at fairly high intensity and pushing themselves to improve and endure even more. And then they go through games where there is inherent risk of impact and other injury types which have nothing to do with the medical department.
So the exposure is massive, is it really that surprising we have a few longer term injuries which are not responding as initially hoped?

Hmm, short memories, we used to have much worse injury problems.

To @Modric THFC's point, we are simply not very forthcoming re detail, because people/media seem to think injury recovery is 2+2 =

I'm not sure that's entirely true. I will say that we seemed to have many more short-term injuries in the pre-Poch days - the ones that lasted a month, or a couple of months.

Now, the problem is more that the injuries our boys do get take far longer to recover from - or so it seems.

FWIW... looks like the key to winning the title is to finish 2nd on the injury table o_O

I know I'll get lambasted for this because 'fans have the right to voice their opinion, whatever it may be' .. But 'kinnel, I swear some of our supporters aren't happy unless they're complaining about something, ANYTHING.

The management of the Lamela situation appears to have been badly carried out. Same applies to Rose, let alone Wanyama.

Out of curiosity which teams would those that are unhappy highlight as having better medical departments than us?

Teams, plural. And please, looking at a decent sample size.

Kane has twice come back from nasty injuries. Dembele's condition has been known for some years (I heard about his chronic issues -hip incidentally- for some time), and I'd wager that Poch has got more quality playing time out of him than any other manager he's had here. Verts has come through two injuries, Winks has just come through a bad one, Toby came through. Lamela's injury issues seem freakish, the whole Rose thing is weird, I have no worries that Wanyama won't be fit by the end of October latest, and Edwards? You can't really count him as a squad loss at this point.

I think they're doing fine.

As under Poch very few players seem to get short term ones

The nature of them is key

If you get impact type injuries, that's absolutely fine. The ones to worry about are the poor conditioning muscular ones that plague Arsenal or individuals like Woodgate and Anderton.

Watching the Walker situation at City will be interesting, to see if they can manage him as well as Poch could.

Maybe the combination of his footballing brain and the extra running is just one of the reasons why he looks a better player than Sheringham ever was
