Mathys Tel

Whatever some think about Tel he will be in the matchday squad v Brentford and unlike some of our squad has been injury free since he joined us ( that's put a curse on him for sure :))

I'm not looking at his stats alone. I'm looking at his positioning, work rate, touch, physicality, confidence, use of both feet, the way he tries to make things happen. Despite being quite a new player in the hardest league in the World to play in and playing mostly under a really terrible manager in Thomas Frank. I don't see many better 21 year olds out there right now and I don't really see any that would be prepared to come to Spurs.

You're just saying words here that would make you right if they were actually true

But forwards are ultimately judged on outputs, ie goals, assists and chances created. Whether a real top prospect would come to Spurs is another matter, that in itself doesn’t make Tel a top prospect.

Tel has played in a horific Spurs set up for two seasons and the majority of his starts only came at the back end of last season. With all that said his output is better than Savinho and some are delighted at the idea we might be spending loads of money on him, because that's the currency they use to value a player.

I’m not thrilled about the prospect of signing Savinho either tbh. I suspect his nationality and the fact that he plays for city has got people excited. But Brazil are a very average side these days and have been for nearly 20 years.

Hey we are Spurs we love to rate players with empty platitudes. I remember someone calling Tel exceptional last season. 🤣🤣🤣

The single best thing about the De Zerbi evolution is that we are actually going to see a raft of quality players join and so we can stop pretending that the mediocre ones are better than they actually are.

Tel is a young player with potential hell no is he one of the top prospects in Europe. That's entirely gas. Cubasi is a top prospect, Yamal is a top prospect, Endrick is a top prospect, Estavao is a top prospect, Franco Mastantuono is a top prospect, Barco is a top prospect, Quenda is a top prospect. You need to broaden your horizons a little bit if you really think Tel is considered either a top prospect or in the top 10 talents under 22, because he bloody isn't. 🤣

And equally, there are some who like to dump on anything which might sparkle at the club ;)

The youths you've mentioned are all (with the exception of Estavao) part of mega setups. I think once again you're allowing your own anti-hubris meter to affect a fair judgement of Tel's potential. No-one is saying he is Yamal, but some are saying he has a lot of potential which could well unlock if he gets the run he is working for. In many ways he strikes me as a bit like Kane in the sense that he is a hard worker who will finesse his skillset and develop into a really good player (note, I am NOT saying he will hit Kane levels as I think Kane is a unique generational story). Let's see.

Feel free to rate however you want, I just find the dichotomy frustrating when we have all of these world class players and top prospects but yet aren't winning the title every year at a canter or even challenging for it. Hell in recent seasons we aren't even challenging to be in the top half of the table. 😅

Tell me, when was the last time a side won the title without a great manager (Leicester are the outlier)?
And who is saying we are 'stacked' with world class players?

I just would like a dose of realism but cool, rate these guys to whatever fantastical level you think is appropriate but then don't complain (and this isn't directed specifically at you) when we and those players don't hit the heights that you must expect to reach given how they are rated.

The only complaint I ever have in these situations are the managers who consistently fudge up their careers/career management. What I will say in De Zerbi's case is he might be the first manager in some time who has my trust, so his judgement is fine by me.

I think the part that amuses me the most is the majority who make these claims don't even watch football outside of Spurs and the PL so how would they know who is a top prospect and who isn't. 🤣

An assumption, no?

I saw someone make a comparison between Son and Tel at this stage and I just shake my head. I actually watched Son when he went to Leverkusen because we were linked to him at Hamburg and the level of difference between him and Tel is significant and even then people doubted Son and weren't claiming he was one of the "top prospects" in the game. 🤣

Comparing Sonny and Tel is probably just because they each play off the left. Sonny took a season -and a manager who trusted him- to develop into what he became.

Per 90 mins equivalents (EPL)

25 games / 9 G/A (transfermrkt) in 2 years
Chances created 2.00 (FOTMOB) 25/26 season. For reference: Saka 2.5, Gakpo 1.8, Salah 2.1, Mitoma 1.6, Fernandes 3.0

*Edited with less waffle from me

Never heard of most of them.

(note to self: am I watching enough football?)

If you read enough of these threads everyone is bloody world class, or exceptional or brilliant.

I thought you trusted Ange?

When people are comparing Son to Tel in Germany then I might be making an assumption but it's bloody strong one.

See I've really agreed with that view but probably because as I mentioned I specifically went and watched Son at Hamburg and Leverkusen due our prior link. I absolutely wanted him the summer he went to Leverkusen, if I still posted on Coys I could show you my posts at the time. I believed in him and knew what he was capable of because I had already seen it. As you might know I'm also not a believer in some sort of PL superiority where a player can't work. Son was always a good fit imo, he just had the perfect game style.

When you call Tel a Top prospect then yes you are calling him Yamal. That is what a top prospect is. Yamal isn't the finished article either, he's obviously very good to excellent already but if his current level is where he ends up then that will be a disappointment.

Tel has potential, he had some good physical attributes and a never given up spirit that I think will take him far but do these things make him a Top Prospect? If so then just like the World Class definition the classification doesn't mean a great deal. I personally rate Odobert more and I don't think he's a Top Prospect either.

I mean it's language thing top means exactly that; top, not middle not bottom but actually at the top. Why he can't just be an exciting prospect (if that's how some feel) I don't know? Tottenham fans always have to go too far. Last season Mikey Moore was a "generational talent". Does my head in.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, I just think a little bit of realism is good and that would actually lead to nice surprises (a la Kane) rather than disappointments like Edwards, Onamah and hundred other developing players overhyped by our fan base.

21 years of age and there are some who are saying he is never going to be a very good player. I despair sometimes i really do.
Maybe he won't be, maybe he will be. No one actually knows. Only time will tell, but 21 isn't a baby in the professional sense. Many players have already made their mark by this stage(the top players generally) 😅

You said the same thing about Davinson Sánchez every year he played for us until he was 27 😂. We’re allowed to think a player isn’t a top player or a top prospect. A big reason we ended up in the mess we’ve seen over the last two seasons is that the forwards simply haven’t been good enough. That’s not all on Tel, and nobody is saying replacing generational talents like Kane and Son was ever going to be easy, but we haven’t even come close yet. Pretending our players are better than they actually are won’t help us in the long run.

Making a mark is one thing going on to become a very good player is different alltogether. And most players never hit their top until older.

Of course we are but at the age he is its foolish [ at best] to say he never will, which seems to be the thoughts of some.

It’s been the same on this place for years. When Toby and Jan were approaching the end of their time here, people were seriously suggesting that Dier and Sánchez, or Dier and Foyth, were more than worthy replacements for a genuinely world-class pairing. I’d actually put both Toby and Jan in that bracket, especially given the way we discuss what qualifies as a top player.

People had already decided Sánchez was better than Toby when Pochettino benched Toby around the time he was renegotiating his contract. Poch was also being described as the best “pound-for-pound manager in the game”. Like you, I don’t see the need to overpraise everything connected with THFC just because it’s associated with the club.
