Mathys Tel

We've got two games left right?

So it would have to be for both

The more I think about it the more it becomes the right call given Solanke will hopefully be close to fully fit for second game

I think it’s just the sort of thing that probably torches his relationship with Tel, and I’m not sure the positives of Solanke starting the final game outweigh that.

You’re basically saying to Tel that you don’t believe he can be more effective than a guy that can’t play those 180 minutes. And even if that might be true (and I’m not sure that it is) footballers have tremendous self belief. Tel himself will believe he can be more effective. And it just feels like it’s going to make their relationship extremely difficult.

I agree around the relationship but.

Another way to look at it is Richie is now out....so we are left with Muani. If anything happened to him we are down to Scarlett if Dom if left out.

At This point I'm not sure there is much of a relationship left, but the manager has to put what he thinks the best squad forward is

I don't think we would be seeing as much fall out on line if the manager wasn't disliked as much,

Our 65 million first choice striker who needs minutes in for on 4th choice striker (if everyone is fit ) is a no brainer.

If we had the option to replace him with RKM/Odobert and he still went with Tel, then those kicking off excessively may have a point

I think ‘needs minutes’ in your post is the key point. That’s probably why Tel is more upset this time.

He seemed to take the original squad list news at the start of the season quite well. About as well as a professional being told he wasn’t going to play in Europe would take it. And then he got on with the job and hasn’t complained despite barely playing.

He’s now being told he’s out again for a guy who isn’t fully fit. I get on the face of it Solanke starts ahead of him all things being equal. But all things are not equal. And I think the manager probably being on thin ice with some of the squad might take a different decision to pay heed to that. I feel like this is Frank saying ‘the data says X so I’m going to make Y decision’ rather than understanding squad dynamics at the highest level, and how relationships can be impacted.

If Tel’s camp is already briefing he’s unhappy, clearly it’s tinkled him off. And it’s been a long while since we’ve had a player openly tinkled off in this manner.

If we need a result in the Frankfurt game I'd rather be relying on Solanke for a goal than Tel - if it was a call that had to be made now rather than delayed till then that's enough to swing it for me.

Just one of those calls that people will jump on to add to the negativity

It's not even close TBH, not that I highly rate either but Solanke is massively more importantly more important to us

I am fairly sure the rules state when they swaped Tel in for Solanke they had to swap them back once Solake was fit enough to be in the squad again.

Personally I’m not trying to add to the negativity, and I totally get the calculation in isolation that you’d rather have Solanke than Tel all things being equal.

I just don’t think things are all equal, and I think the relationship with the player is also an important thing to consider.

It’s also a fully fit Tel against a Solanke that is returning from injury.

It was Hobson's choice for Frank. He would have got slammed either way.

The guy Tel should be angry with is Muani. If he had been leading the line well, scoring goals and generally putting in the effort then Tel probably gets selected.

I can promise you Frank would have happily selected both Solanke and Tel and left Muani out.

I don’t think you actually can….
