We’re paying more upfront than United were willing to is my guess. West Ham are up the creek without a paddle financially
The Beeb reporting that ManU aren’t willing to pay over their valuation of any player now they’ve had their pants pulled down so often recently.

Seems like our ownerships have gone through a body-swap.

This won’t be the norm. Not should it be. We’ve fallen behind and have to catch up. That means spending £300M+ on 5/6 players and some high wages free transfers this summer.

Hope would be this works out and the it’s about signings 1/2 marquee signings each summer and investing in the best young talent.

Good to read the words of someone whose worked with the lad and observed how he learns.

"You're looking at a 20-year-old, he's landed in the Premier League and plays week in, week out," says Rusk. "He's instantly gained the trust of everyone in the building.

"And one thing you can't underestimate as well with a young player, he moved to a new country, new environment, different language, the predominant language. And he was able to deal with all of those things and seamlessly become a regular starter in the Premier League.

"There was a level of maturity about him without any shadow of a doubt. Single-minded, but really good to work with - and very respectful. And all of those ingredients lend themselves to someone developing and becoming a better player."

What has helped Fernandes settle in is the player's ability to learn new information quickly - which will bode him well as he prepares for a third summer move in three years.

"I've worked with a lot of players where they've got an unbelievable raw talent, but maybe less coachable in terms of how they're willing to absorb information," says Rusk. "But Matty was, from that point of view, a dream to work with."

Absolutely.
And, in a way, we've been 'lucky' that it's fallen at a time that works for us. The earning infrastructure of the club is in pretty good health still. The club is still in a position where its image and personnel are reasonably attractive to the type of player we are requiring to elevate us once more. The recent trophy win does actually count for something.
Not being in Europe this season means we don't have to meet the same financial regulations from UEFA that, say, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Saudi Sportswashing Machine do. So we have this one summer or season when we can spend much more than normal before returning to more of a book-balancing mode.
Being aggressive quickly on transfers is going to catch out some of the other big teams who have to be a little more cautious with their spending while also noting that we are contributing to a distorting factor in the market which will only hurt them - I've seen Man Utd fans despairing that their unwillingness to match us on Fernandes will only mean that they are forced to pay a similar amount later for an inferior player

i am still going to wait til he puts on the shirt AND the end of the window to see if this compromises our ability to upgrade/reinforce our front three.

we are stacked with CBs, LBs and CMs ... outgoings watch is going to be huge !
