Internet porn to be blocked in UK

Cameron announces online porn ban for every UK household commencing next year.

It does set a worrying precedent IMO. If the government are going down the route internet censorship then what other controvercial content will be banned in the interest of public safety?

Classic governments not having a clue about the internet.

Not only will this not work, it will make the situation worse. At the moment commercial porn websites are liable for the content on their website, meaning that they don't allow things like child pornography be hosted.

You wanna block access to these websites? It will only send kids to the p2p websites (where they are already getting their music) to download porn, and in p2p file sharing there is no responsibility taken for content. Much easier to come across more dangerous imagery.

Even before this comes in to effect there will be a way around it that gives parents even less control through things like proxies, TOR and p2p file sharing. Kids will hear about it, tell their friends and we'll be back to square one, except parents will be complacent and think they don't need to monitor their kids.

Don't want your kids to look at porn? Don't let them use the internet unsupervised.

Put simply I won't be opting in but I'll still be able to get pornography if I choose, and if I can do it so can kids.

Great, my Virgin (ahem) connection will be affected thanks to those downloading their stash before any ban!

The idea is that more porn will now be illegal such as that classified violent or extreme porn. There will be greater powers to monitor people's usage. I would assume it will be easier for the government to monitor and bring prosecutions against people if they know who has requested to opt out with their ISP.

I wouldn't want my name on any such list tbh. You have to ask who else would have such info. Would employers be able to check etc. I don't think it's worth the hassle.

Also, what the hell is the definition of 'porn that depicts rape'? Talk about a hell of a grey area.

I have to agree. It would be just as simple to enforce ISPs to give parents the option to opt out of porn. It still won't work (as I've explained above) but at least you wouldn't be infringing on personal liberties.

This is already illegal in Scotland.

Punishable by up to 3 years in jail.

But again, what does this mean? 'Realistic depictions', these are just buzz words. Do two consenting adult porn stars acting out a rape fantasy count as realistic? I mean I can't imagine how anyone could think they are realistic depictions of rape, but if those aren't the videos being talked about then I don't know what are.

The most realistic depictions of rape I've ever seen have come in films on TV, not on the internet.

To place filters to prevent the distribution of violent porn that inflicts rape, I have no problem with.

To try and block pornography overall will be next to impossible. As someone mentioned the P2P route is an option as well as proxies.

Of course the government and its poor advisors have no clue as usual. They seem to be great at finger pointing without having any real understanding of the matter.

Are you talking about actual rapes or simulated rape? Of course theres no argument that any images/video of actual rapes should be treated in the same category as child abuse images.

On the topic of simulated rape, I'm not so sure. First, the evidence is inconclusive as to whether it actually has an effect on human behaviour, secondly I do wonder where the threshold between kinky/hardcore/bdsm sex and "rape simulation" lies (very much a grey area that seems impossible to police IMO), and thirdly if we go down that route why stop with rape videos? How about we ban all violent video games to stop gun and knife crime? How about music which normalises self harm?

its disgraceful how little they understand the technology

Absolutely. I already posted in Random (can't quite remember which thread) about how easy it is to use an untraceable (tor) connection to the internet and store everything on a hidden encrypted disk within an encrypted disk.

This kind of stuff is usually for those with something to hide, the ridiculously paranoid or white hats. All the government are doing is making it so that this kind of technology becomes more mainstream and therefore easier for those they don't want using it to use it.

As it stands, I'm guessing your average paedo doesn't know how to encrypt disks, access tor, etc. Once the government brings in this law it will force the software into the mainstream and all the people they could previously convict quite easily will now have double-encrypted disks and non-existent ISP logs. The police will spend weeks of their time and millions of our Pounds trying to crack what they won't be able to crack, probably followed by weeks of the CPS's time spending loads more of our money trying to get a conviction they can no longer get.

Surely just a very brief word with GCHQ about the technology would make it clear that this is something the government absolutely doesn't want to do.
