I was searching for a link that @ShipOfGoldblum I think posted and then @scaramanga too which opens up paywall newspapers. What was that site!?

The backdoor has no doubt probably been closed now, but interested to know if it works on old articles or if there are other clever little things people use to get around things. All in theory of course, naturally the GG membership would not frequent such sites.

Sometimes just turning off js for a site will do it. Or a waybackmachine search will

It’s not hacking and it’s not illegitimate. If publishers choose to make information publicly available to browsers to suit their commercial ends, then users can choose to view that information. Hard paywalls remain unbreachable.

I’m on slightly shakier ground w/r/t scientific journals and published books, but I really do love those credentials-thieving repository sites.

Right. I can see both sides of it. Writers need to be paid, but knowledge should be available too. So it balances out in the end.

This method doesn't negate proper paywalls. This just exploits the "cake and eat it" method of wanting all the Googly benefits being a free site brings without being a free site.

I don’t think that the range of monetisation models and incentives for general news production, or the range of potential future scenarios for the general news industry, fits very neatly into that rather reductive slogan. I’m not even sure that it applies at all.

And you understand why? Not just the pressures from proprietors to deliver a certain vision, or the trade-off between support and access to politicians, but also the huge disproportionality between PR budgets and newsroom budgets which allows commercial interests to dominate news agendas?

I will come back on this later if you like but I am not arguing the merits of paywalls or the like, nor the bias of media outlets. These are your points. The point I am making is that if one does not contribute to journalism, local journalism in particular, then ultimately you will be reading the pushed message of those who do pay for it. The mechanics of how this is done now is another discussion.

I pay for the FT. It’s bias is clear - money. And that is refreshing as you know where you stand.

Heidiger the German philosopher said there is no such thing as no bias. Every story or history has a bias. The only way to negate for it is to understand the authors stance . The BBC takes a lot of flak but it is relatively liberated from tyrannical owners or commercial necessities. It has its own traditions and cultures and it’s staff are a little intellectual left leaning. Fine with that.
