Fan Advisory Board

So a few points

- Good of club to "embrace it" and I like the representation (9 groups, rules require a min of 6 representatives, not even segments)

That said, reading this -> Fan-Engagement-Standard-March-2023-FINAL.pdf (premierleague.com) . I'm genuinely trying to understand the goal? (no, not being a dingdong), broadly the whole model seems to come down
- Clubs need to have a fan body
- Clubs need to talk to that fan body at least twice a year and listen to their concerns
- As a general rule, the club will share information with said fan body in "timely" manner

A couple of challenges I have with this
- It's so vague other than the establishment guidelines, what do fans get out of this? what fundamental decisions do you think will change at club level?
- And while people will get angry at this comment, what's in it for the club? this matters because without a perceived benefit, some/most clubs will make this a token/participation activity.
I thought I'd read previously that the Trust wouldn't be able to nominate someone to sit on the board?. I can't recall the reasoning though? Legal?

They can’t have board members from THST on a fan advisory board, but they can have non-board level members. Hence my cynicism when both Martin and Kat stepped down from the THST Board (but are presumably still members).

Edit : Actually not sure if the restriction would apply in this case. I recall reading, when it was being mooted that there should be a fan rep on the actual Board of a club, that this would be a conflict of interest as per the THST articles of association. A fan advisory board would I imagine be different.

The Club is delighted to share details of the new Fan Advisory Board (FAB), which will represent significantly greater fan engagement and wide representation for supporters at home and abroad. The FAB will provide a new forum for elected members from different sections of our fanbase, inclusive and reflective of our diversity, ensuring fans are consulted, kept informed and their views considered during Club decision-making.

Along with the Government’s ‘Fan Led Review’ and the Premier League’s Fan Engagement Standard, the Club has shaped its FAB during extensive consultation with the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust, Proud Lilywhites, SpursAbility, Spurs REACH and a number of Official Supporters' Clubs.

The FAB’s remit will cover a wide range of off-field topics, such as the Club’s strategic vision and objectives; off-pitch performance updates, priorities and plans; operational matchday issues; proposals relating to significant changes to Club heritage assets; stadium issues and plans; the Club’s community strategy, equality, diversity and inclusion commitments and plans for broader supporter engagement.

Applications for supporters to join the FAB are now open. Members will be drawn from a wide representation of the Club’s fanbase, with supporters from the following groups able to apply and stand to be elected by their fellow fans:

  • Season Ticket Holders for the Men's team (including Seasonal Premium Members)
  • Season Ticket Holders for the Women's team
  • One Hotspur Members
  • Domestic Official Supporters' Club members
  • International Official Supporters' Club members
We strongly encourage applications from members of any of these groups who are passionate about having a greater say in how their Club is run moving forward.

With equality, diversity and inclusion at its heart, the FAB will also feature nominated representatives from the following supporter organisations:

  • Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust
  • Proud Lilywhites (LGBTQ+ Supporters' Association)
  • SpursAbility (Disabled Supporters' Association)
  • Spurs REACH (Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage Supporters' Association)
The Club itself will be represented on the FAB by Executive Director, Donna-Maria Cullen, and Head of Supporter Engagement, Levi Harris, with the Chairman, other Board members and senior Club staff attending selected meetings.

The FAB will meet four times a year and one of its supporter representatives will attend a Club Board meeting four times a year. Working groups will also be created to focus on issues of particular importance to supporters.

Applications for supporters to join the FAB are now open, with applications to be submitted by Sunday 14 May. Elections are scheduled to begin in mid-June and close within two weeks. The first FAB meeting is expected to take place in July.

Applicants must complete an online form for consideration and tell us why they are a suitable candidate for the FAB. Applications also require the endorsement of five fellow supporters from the same section of the fanbase to demonstrate they have the support of other fans. The contact details of these endorsers must be provided when completing an FAB application so that the Club can contact them and verify their endorsement via an online form.

An FAB Selection Panel will review all complete applications and shortlist them before supporters are invited to vote for their representative(s) in independent elections managed by Civica Election Services. The FAB Selection Panel will be made up of a Co-Chair of the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust, a Co-Chair of Proud Lilywhites, one of the Club’s external Equality Champions, a Club Director / Non-Executive Director and the Club’s Head of Supporter Engagement.

Full details, including how supporters can apply to join the Fan Advisory Board, can be found here...

Donna-Maria Cullen, Executive Director and Nominated Board Level Official for fan engagement, Tottenham Hotspur, said: “We are delighted to be announcing the launch of our Fan Advisory Board. It represents a strong and structured forum for fan engagement and more extensive communication with supporters.

"We invite applications from Men’s and Women’s team Season Ticket Holders, One Hotspur Members and Official Supporters’ Club members at home and abroad. These supporters will be joined by representatives of our key supporter groups, the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust, Proud Lilywhites, SpursAbility and Spurs REACH.

“We are proud of the rich diversity that exists amongst our global fanbase and believe the constitution and makeup of the Fan Advisory Board will ensure it reflects this.

“We should like to thank the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust, Proud Lilywhites, SpursAbility and Spurs REACH for their work in helping us get to this position and look forward to seeing our Fan Advisory Board come together.”

Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust said: “We welcome the establishment of the Fan Advisory Board as a major step forward for fan engagement at the Club as it creates a binding obligation to consult with supporters’ representatives on key issues, something we have long campaigned for.

“Fans are a crucial part of the Club’s overall success and it’s vital they have a voice at the top table. We are now consulting our members on the FAB proposals with a recommendation that we take up the two allocated seats.”

Proud Lilywhites, SpursAbility and Spurs REACH, said: “It’s important that we have worked collectively with the Club from the start, to develop and agree the Terms of Reference for the Fan Advisory Board.

“Fans should be at the heart of everything a football club does, and we are pleased to have been involved from the beginning ensuring that all Spurs fans, regardless of race, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity are represented. We can’t wait to see what we can achieve, working together, on behalf of all Spurs fans. COYS!"

Why are people even getting involved with this? Its PR. I wouldnt have any confidence on most football fans to put their shoes on their appropriate feet. There is a very easy way to change things at any club stop following them, get a life.[/QUOTE]

I think the bit you're missing is, their football club is very big part of their life.

It shouldnt be, it's a game, something you enjoy in your spare time, if it's any more there's something missing in their lives. I love the club, but I dont expect too much other than provide some good times and I'll live with the bad, I know for sure I couldn't run the club or the team.

Indeed and i think the vast majority of fans accept that as well, sadly there will always be a few who think they could do better and think they know how to do it.

Yep, in their vast experiences of running a half a billion dollar business with significant global media exposure, huge variations in possible in year income, all while competing with peers that basically cheat.

But, but, I bought a ticket once, and a kit ...

Stuff like this always feels a bit Kapo-y to me. Pull a handful of mugs a little way inside the tent, then get them to do the dirty work bricking on all the other plebs
