Decisions on PAS Giannina and Panathinaikos

The UEFA Club Financial Control Body, following a meeting of its adjudicatory chamber, decided not to admit PAS Giannina FC and Panathinaikos FC to the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League.

The UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), further to the investigation performed earlier this June and after the meeting of its adjudicatory chamber in Nyon, Switzerland, has taken decisions with regard to the two Greek clubs PAS Giannina FC and Panathinaikos FC.

The CFCB has concluded that the licence awarded to both clubs by the national association to participate in the UEFA club competitions was not issued in accordance with the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations (Edition 2012) due to the non-fulfilment of financial criteria.

Therefore, PAS Giannina FC, who were entitled to enter the 2013/14 UEFA Europa League on sporting merit, and Panathinaikos FC, who as the next best-placed club would be first considered to replace PAS Giannina FC, have both been refused the admission to this season’s competition.

These decisions are final and may be appealed before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Norwegian club IL Hødd who sensationally won the Norwegian cup last year, come from a small town of 5500 people, have played a total of one season in the Norwegian top flight since 1972 (in 1995 - their fourth ever top flight season), and are currently third in the second division. They are also one of the smaller clubs in this years competition, I believe!

Fact is you play 2 games in a week regardless of how they fit and other teams seem to manage it, whats the point of holding players back as if we were still in the CL we would still face the same issue and I bet then people would say first 11 every time as it's the CL which clearly indicates whether or not people want to admit it that it's only because it's the Europa League that they would even consider playing a weakened team.

Clubs very rarely, if ever, play Sunday in the PL when they have a Tuesday fixture in the CL as far as I can remember. I did already mention this point in my post though, that "in those cases it's more of a problem that a tough PL game the weekend before the CL game can impact their performance in the CL"

The point from in the article I posted and the quote from it was that it seems quite likely that although clubs "manage it" there are ill effects to their PL form. As has been mentioned already most big clubs manage this situation by rotating, very few teams play a fairly consistent starting 11 across both CL and PL matches and manage to do well in both as far as I can tell at least.

Assuming that there will most likely be ill effects to PL form I don't think it's particularly far fetched to accept that to a greater extent when in the CL than in the EL. Both from a financial and sporting viewpoint the CL dwarfs the EL.

I have a spot spot for Prestatyn, been there many many times. Their ground, or I should really say Pitch, is next to Pontins Holiday camp.
Great win for them, that is already a massive windfall for them

Going to see Brighton against villarreal on the 27th. Then no more football for me for all of August for that is family month and we will be away.

I hope this year we just have the kids in the europa league, think those extra few points we threw away last season after europa league games could have made all the difference. That match at home to everton bale looked fudged.

Draw for the 3rd Qualifying Round of the Champions League is below. Losing teams will enter the Europa League with Spurs at the play-off round.

Note that the draw includes FC Salzburg v Fenerbahce. UEFA, who last month suspended Fenerbahce and Besiktas from this season's European competitions (see earlier post), have agreed to readmit them pending the outcome of their appeals to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

A bit unfortunate for the other Turkish clubs that would have replaced them and for the teams that were expecting to be seeded due to their suspension. CAS might not reach their decision until the end of August - after the CL and EL play-offs. Could be very confusing if CAS uphold the UEFA suspension.
