I will be disappointed if he goes.
If I was RDZ I would be trying to sell him the longer term picture, next season we really should have Europe and plenty of game time to go around.
Stick it for this season, we will give you all the game time we can because we see you as part of our future.
Should he decide to go though it's understandable and I wish him well and nothing but the best, he has been a good servant to the club.

This, people keep glossing over this.

Spence clearly wants out, he's 26, his profile is highest, Porro extended, no European football (no extra games), don't think it's a coincidence the bid is from Italy (he's played there before, so obviously comfortable).

Club is both doing the right thing re having committed players, and also the right thing by those players by letting them go (important that players see us as both a destination and a path). Put a good sell on clause, let him go, buy a youth prospect as backup, move on.

Yeah...not having the extra games of Europe this season will definitely play on the minds of next off the rank first teamers like Spence and Bergvall, oppurtunities could be limited...and at their age they just want to play.

So the right back argument seems overcooked.

Of course but thats circumstance not preference or his natural role. He was until he turned up a full time RB.

Good luck to him. Rarely shied away or let us down when called upon.

Can’t help but feel this stunts Gray’s development more as he’ll be the natural back up for Porro who will inevitably get injured this season.

Sale only makes sense to me if the player wanted to leave, and while his stock is as high as it is now after the World Cup I can’t blame him for wanting to be first choice somewhere. Looks a bargain for Inter too

i predict that by the next world cup, Spence will be that prototype inverted full-back that every elite coach wants. he doesn’t just bomb up and down the line like a traditional left-back, he steps inside, receives between the lines, progresses the ball under pressure, and still has the recovery speed to shut down transitions.

I respect his personal decision to move and good luck to him, but from a club perspective, it just feels like a bad move. He needs replacing, so if this fee goes towards the forward line, it’s a shortsighted move. Having Gray (who hates playing there) as the backup RB is asking for trouble on multiple fronts.
