Cristian Romero

Not indispensable, can leave if it is on our terms and not in the last minute of the transfer window.

Decent player when he is on it, but not consistent enough.

Interestingly Micky also questioned the sacking, saying it didn’t make sense yet that hasn’t seen to been picked up anywhere near as much as Romero’s (if at all).
Ultimately, if that’s how they feel right now, does it matter? Providing they still put it all on the pitch then their entitled to question things, and opinions change over time so it’s up to the new boss to win them over with his plans/vision

I feel like I get to a place where I’m like ‘we’re all pretty fair minded people here’ and then I read something like ‘he gave them a free pass to lose 22 games’ as if that’s why a World Cup winner with a clear winning mentality likes a particular manager. And it makes me want to pull my hair out. The disrespect, alongside the idea that we were just rolling in trophies, especially European trophies, before last month.

It might be something to do with the fact that this particular manager promised that these players would be trophy winners with this club, and then made it happen. That might be why this player likes this manager.

I agree he had underperfermoed at times in the league. Mostly to do with individual moments, lapses of concentration.

I guess part of the question is did we lose however many games we did with him in the team (fewer than 22) in part because he wasn't demanding enough of himself or others. I'm not so sure.

I'll gladly admit that I rate Romero higher than most. But when I watch him play I see someone consistently taking responsibility, playing with bravery, demanding a lot from himself. His in possession game is the most obvious, but not only that.

Another question is can he step up from that less than good enough league season in the right circumstances. Or is it a history likely to repeat itself. I think the former.

There's also the question of experience and leadership. We'll lose Son at some time fairly soon. Imo we need keep the experience and leadership we have and add to it.

Of course the trophy has created a memory for them and us, and it blinds us to reality (hence so much revision already on Ange)

But lets be clear, Ange allowed this side to lose 22 games, was any single player actually held accountable for performance? Romero (and I truly rate him) is the most guilty of turn up when he wants, and the fudging manager let him get away with that, if you don't think people like managers who let them have an easy ride vs. constantly being accountable (I'm sure United players loved OGS) ... ok

I'm the last person you can accuse of believing we are/were rolling in trophies, I have a history of calling out that most fans, including on this board have no idea of how limited Spurs success in the entirety of it's history is (18 trophies in 143 years)

The entire premise of your post is the idea that Ange let him get away with poor performance, as if the actual European trophy that Romero was critical to us winning is just meaningless.

Romero didn’t play in many of those 22 losses. But he’s a World Cup winner with high standards who knows what it takes to win when the pressure is on. The players that did play in those 22 losses were for the most part dealing with ludicrous circumstances and a relentless schedule. I don’t think there was any amount of Ange being more on their backs at any point that would have changed much, and actually that probably would have served to poison the spirit the team clearly had in bringing home a European trophy. Which again, is not meaningless, and has been really hard for our club to even get close to winning.
 
One thing which came out at the end of the season was that Romero had played on with that toe injury in varying stages. It sounds miniscule of course. In my (not as recently) regular games, I caught my left toe in the turf doing some action or other. When I took my boot off after the match, the toe was slightly swollen and bruised. The next day it was a rainbow! Not broken, but something had happened. I could walk OK, go to gym and it did ache. Iced it, etc, regularly, but was not able to play for 7 or 8 weeks (apparently called 'turf toe'). It was mostly fine but would aggravate. I wonder if he was dealing with a professional's version of that? If so, I could see it having an impact for sure?

As I’ve new saying for an age.. the clubs Romero wants and may want him can never afford him unless he runs down his contract

When he is on it, he is one of the best in the world, but he isn't "on it" enough.

There will Walsh be debates as to who is to blame
The key is we have seen him being brilliant and seen him be gash. We need a lot more of the former and he needs to actually be available to play a lot more

In a market where a Bournemouth CB is rumoured to be going for £70m and Guehi is valued at that… he is worth even more
But the issue ain’t the fee, it’s the suitors, there really aren’t many. That limits him and us and we should not reduce the fee
 
Up until the last two rounds of the EL and final cuti reminded me of many fine players we have had, great player, potential to be WC but had "settled" at spurs.
There was no pressure on him to win trophies, he could coast and turn up when it suited him.
It would never be on him, Tottenham don't win trophies.

From the frankfurt game I perceived a different mindset, he was sharper, more committed and actually looked like a proper leader.
I don't think he was alone in that.
To me it appears that ange finally got something over to them, something that has struck a chord with several key players, Romero, Porro, son and Maddison in particular.
I'm one of the many that has doubts over the tactical ability of ange, but I'm now wondering about his motivational talents.
Will be interesting to see if we have turned a corner and can push on.

This past season. In hindsight, I think he simply came off the back of too much football. He probably needed a longer pre-season/should've been phased in a bit later in August. Ange suggested this was one of the mistakes last season (pre-season versus a realistic take of the workload the international players had endured).
 
For me he is our best CB, he has had his moments for sure but our whole defence is left wide open because our M/F has no DM which leaves us porrus when we are attacked.

I know i have said it before but we REALLY need a DM and until we get one our defense will be run over as they were in lots of games last season.

Not sure how a DM keeps him fit to play for us or means that he actually marks his man and doesn’t walk off
But that doesn’t take away the need for a DM of course
