Climate Change

Those that get ahead quick will win the race to the future economy, been saying that for a while (in fairness not as long as @Rorschach, but its now being seen and translated into cold fact

Thats why I feel like China will eventually overtake the US, they'll end up with an abundance of cheap green power to run everything from manufacturing to transport to data centres. The US are too rigid to change, they can't build high speed rail and everything is built around cars. There's barely a world cup stadium you can easily get to via public transport.

It's actually unbelievable that a country that's so advanced in a lot of ways with all that wealth doesn't even have 1 high speed trainline.

To be honest, I think autonomous zero emission cars will make hub transport like trains and buses obsolete fairly soon. Private cars will probably go too. There will just be a pool fleet that's you'll book each door-to-door journey with Future Uber.

They're not going to take you thousands of miles though, going from say LA to San Fran train would likely be the most efficient mode of transport based on the number of people that make that journey every day.

Cool Your Jets - reduce your country's carbon footprint by flying to another country!!
It was a ridiculous article.... especially from The Times. Nonsensical. Almost like a pointless assignment given to a work experience journo. Then accidentally got published

Finished off with a picture of people jumping into ponds, lakes or rivers...let's promote that🤦, how many died over the previous week of hot weather.

The inappropriate pictures of frolicking in the sun are unfortunately endemic with these articles. Pictures of drought or patients on hospital trollies would be a better choice.

How many died in the UK in this heatwave?

We definitely need to build more of those tree things along streets, like tropical cities do (I was shocked at how green Sao Paulo is a street level)

Its a shame companies like Amey have spent the last 15 years cutting them all down to cheap out of their PPP maintenance contracts.

Generally from the heat? ..or misadventures in water?.

The heat will be dangerous today as the wind has dropped right off.
Yes, of course. Water accidents go hand in hand with heatwaves, unfortunately. (This is worth a read on spotting drowning)

I guess UK housing stock and indeed public infrastructure is not designed for those levels of heat. Active cooling will be required, but there are a few easy tricks everyone can do now that will help - shading south-facing windows and trying to implement a passive stack-type effect if you have Velux windows upstairs.

As a species we are f*****, there are too many of us wanting whatever we want now and not prepared to give up what they have or change their lifestyle. The ultra rich and big companies who make the decision are only concerned with their ability to make money.
The hope is with the implementation of AI great numbers of population will be unemployed and die of starvation or in the wars for resources and there might be enough resources to sell and we last an other few generations.

In a 'sensible spieces' world....AI would be a blessing.....it would free up thousands of humans to do the work that's required to keep the planet in balance. (UBI financed by a percentage of the cost savings)
