I genuinely thought we could win that world cup, we played well in all the games, just individual performances let us down, both Lee and Astle missed sitters against Brazil. Everyone says Moore played Pele brilliantly in that game but I thought it was Mullery who kept him quiet, so did Mullery when I spoke to him.
 
Lot of rumours that England players had been nobbled for that game, apparently it went on a lot when playing German teams back then.

I had the same problem with Blanchflower, couldn't see what my old man use to rave about, just saw Mackay, Jones and Greaves, wasn't till I'd been playing for about 6 years that I started to actually think about the game.

I was never able to play sports, I never really twigged what it was really all about until 78 and watching the Dutch team. I was then hooked!
Sitting watching Atilanta vs Dortmund as I type!
Wish I could been a bit more aware of the Grieves in hiss pomp.

They were fabulous, I think Greaves could have been one of the greatest players ever if he could have bothered, he just seemed to enjoy playing too much to worry about systems, tactics and work rate, he was a natural with an amazing instinct of being in the right place at the right time.
