(Brennan) Johnson Again Olé Olé!

The career goals record is 69 in 265 so about 1 every 4 games. His first season for us he got 5 in 38 for us. In his promotion season he got 19 in 53 playing in the Championship, then returned 10 in 44 in his PL season for Forest.

It's a convenient narrative for some that he is an automatic scorer when given starts. In reality he is a player that is good for a goal, but can be left open for criticism when he doesn't find the net. We've all done that one to death to be fair.

I just wish him luck knowing that we've made a strong decision for a change.

I think he is a good player, but there is better out there, its as simplistic as that.

Do you honestly think - goals apart - he is anywhere as good as the other six in the list? Even probably Schade?

For years, we harped and moaned (with good reason) against Levy because he always held onto players when they clearly needed to be moved on,... that he never understood the best time for moving an unwanted player on.

Well, Vini has done just that...
I made no mention of any of that in my post. I was merely showing that saying we haven’t sold a goalscorer is clearly wrong.

I said earlier in this post why we have sold him. His attributes do not fit ‘the horseshoe’.

Is Johnson as good as the other players I mentioned…. Not Mbuemo or Semenyo no…. Though those players are £70m players that have no interest in playing for Spurs. I think Johnson compares to the rest of them though. Note that in that list of goal scoring wingers I think only Semenyo, Mbuemo and perhaps Schade would work in ‘the horseshoe’.

You been watching too much of that neck beard, Nathan Clark on the "extra inch" podcast (not sure what their extra inch is) WTF is the "Horseshoe"?

Would it also be fair to say that Spurs don't let him go unless they have a plan to land better in January?
Remember when Palace apparently messed us about in the summer with Eze? Weird how we;ve rolled straight over with them for Johnson despite us having no replacement in place. Kudus looks knackered to me (and I really hope it is fatigue as the alternative would be worrying).

I’ve not watched any podcasts. I’ve called it a horseshoe for a little while now as it is plain to see our passing shape is pretty much a perfect horseshoe other than Vicario’s long hoofs. Perhaps the extra inch folk lurk on here and nicked the term off of me?

I'm glad Johnson has left. He won't fit into TFs way of playing because he can't carry the ball effectively, and we won't put the ball into the back post for him to finish unless it's in the air.

Always thought he is a good finisher, but he is so weak and his control and dribbling are surprisingly poor.

I think it's wiser to move him quickly so we can get our January target quicker. We can't keep waiting until end of windows to realise we won't get our first 2 choices

Sensible fan reaction?

He's gone to palace for 33 million or so, if he was a top player one of the bigger clubs would be snapping him up at that price

So what are they and us missing?

If we manage to get another player in this window of a higher standard it's not all that odd.

Yes sensible. And we haven't signed a replacement yet. If and when that happens it will be less odd. We don't have one yet. Hence my point.

So we have pinned this thread? We do love holding on don’t we? It was the same with Ange and Son, we all knew they needed to be moved on and when it happens we try to hold on like we hadn’t moaned about them all year.

I get Johnson scored the goal but what else did he do? Why no credit to the defence for hanging on? VDV pretty much won us the game with a goal line clearance, Vicarios save in the last minutes? Just as or if not more important than that goal. Are we going to put up a stickied thread for Vicario when he leaves and forget about all of his mistakes and the bitching you all done about him this season? Are we going to celebrate all the game saving saves he made? No i didn’t think so.

I don't understand what you mean here? Why does how quickly we move Johnson on have an impact on how quickly we can get our own target?

Something that not one of the other 30 odd players used in the game managed to do.... He also played his part in our defensive performance that night (just as every player that started or was subbed on did).

Goals have always been the most celebrated things - because without them no game can ever be won.

I've got no idea. I just kept reading (on Spurs forums) that Palace were messing Spurs about (I realise the likelihood was really that we simply weren't meeting their quoted price or payment terms).

They accepted our offer weeks before he made a move, I suspect Eze wanted a bigger and better club, people need people to blame for failed transfers, I suspect there was none in this case

Seems we all agree that Johnson’s main attribute is getting between the posts and putting the ball in the net.

I find it baffling that other wingers find it so difficult. Werner, Odobert and even Son all guilty of ball watching from the corner of the box and not attacking the space. Luckily Son was capable of scoring all types of goals, the others not so much.

I would have thought it much easier to coach a good foootballer to make runs into certain positions than coach someone who knows where to run on how to be a good footballer (which largely relies on natural talent).

Guessing we will be signing the former and it’s Frank’s job to add the scoring part.

It's because you have to do it a lot of times for every time that it ends up resulting in a goal. It is hard work making lots of sprints and keeping up with play, especially seeing as only 1 time in 10 does the ball actually end up coming across to you to make the finish.

But still use it as a stick.
You don't think it is weird that we have sold one of our first team squad (who came on in the previous game) on the first day of the transfer window without having a replacement in the door?

Kudus looks cooked to me (and if his lack of work rate isn't due to fatigue then it is even more worrying). We're now going into an important game against Sunderland preying he can get through another 90 minutes.

I find it very strange that we haven't kept Palace waiting just a little while for this signing, especially when the fee we are getting for the player isn't particularly high. It would've been useful to have Johnson as an option off the bench against both Brentford and Sunderland, especially considering the injuries and suspension that we have/had for those games.
