Biggest Summer Signings

2008 (Commoli, Ramos): Gomes, Pavlyuchenko, Corluka, Modric, Giovanni Dos Santos

At the time i thought this was one of the best windows i'd ever known. You actually missed out David Bentley. Such an exciting signing at the time which is strange looking back, but £17m and he'd had an outstanding season for Blackburn the year before.

It's funny that two of the most disappointing seasons (Ramos in 2008/9 and AVB in 13/14) followed two of the most exciting summers for transfers.

The best season I remember, on the other hand (Redknapp in 09/10) followed one of the most low-key summers ever.

Just shows that rather than splurge loads on a large-number of big-names, having a settled squad and making a few intelligent additions can lead to a very good season.

as was mentioned above, we have to remember who we lost in those summers too....2008 we lost Berbatov and Keane, 2013 we lost Bale. So although we signed some potentially excellent players, the overall feeling was downbeat because of the immense talent we had to sell

Very true and ties in with my post as well.

If we keep Lloris, Eriksen and Kane we'll have had an excellent window whatever happens

When we talk about Bentley failing with us, I always wonder what would have been if Berbatov has stayed around to get on the end of his crosses.

That's Klinsmann, Davids and VDV as probably the only big name signings we've had in 20 odd years (based on their reputation when we signed them).

All of whom were mainly rejects. Klinsmann had flopped in Italy; Davids was well at the end of his career and VDV was touted to all the big clubs and no-one bit - hence the last minute signing.

Guess it is a very sobering indication of, for all our bravado, where we really place in the football eating table!

Hence the need to strike early and unearth rough diamonds like Bale, Berba and Modric, before they become world class talents....
