That is the way i see it as well, Spence has done well but he has made mistakes the same as our other FBs.

As Deano says, he's been lackadaisical at times but really good in others. Mbuemo springs to mind as his best defensive performance.

I'm not writing him off because he plays for a manager who has no respect for clean sheets. I can imagine all 3 of our senior full-backs would cross that white line with a different mentality in different circumstances. Then we would see how good they are.

I also remember Walker going up another level when he moved to City. Pep didn't want him sprinting up and down the touchline all game. He let him become a great defender and use more intelligence and the surprise element of his overlaps. However, he was reminded constantly that his prime responsibility was as a defender.

Spence has had a couple of ropey games but he's been good for most of it. Strangely, he's looked better on the left than the right but he got to our club by being good on the right so I expect him to kick on.

You watch Spence...he can be a bit lax at times but you can see he has most of the basics of defending. Porro doesn't. That, IMO, is the difference.
Porro was never a defender. People need to remember this, he is a winger/wing back more similar to Ivan Perisic/Christian Ziege that was bought specifically for Conte's system. I'd like to see Porro as a squad option further forward or sold and a proper right back brought in.

I think that is a fair point. He's a wing back really. He is quality on the ball but his defending is so poor at times. Funnily enough, I did think his defending improved early on under Ange but for a while now he's been back to square one. Can't help having no protection and having to run 100mph to recover every few minutes I guess.

With the talk of money being an issue in the summer window, Ange finishing outside Europe via the league (fingers crossed for EL) has set us back massively

This is now turning into a rather costly mistake

It isn't just being outside Europe via the league. We got over £42 million in "merit payments" from the PL for finishing 5th last season. Brentford, who finished 16th, got around £13 million. Forest, who finished 17th, got about £11 million.

So if we do not win the Europa League, we are going to take a huge hit financially due to this season's performance...

We are
Luckily this year the club will have the European money to bridge that gap

Definatel
We don't. We managed 5th with a squad, with less depth albeit no Europe. Unless we win the EL, we'll have no Europe again next season and the younger players will be a year to six months more experienced.

I think its extremely difficult to judge these players due to the poor coaching and tactics they've been subjected to. I don't see how Solanke and Maddison can come off the seasons they had at their previous clubs and general upwards trajectory and look as anonymous as they do now. I can't see how VDV, Udogie etc can look as positive as they did when they first arrived and now look so hapless. I can't see how Bentancur, Bissouma and Son can go from the standards they've consistently displayed at this level to the poor quality they're producing. One or two players, maybe, we can see players like Dele just hit a wall and plummet but the number of players playing well below their previously evidenced standards suggests that this squad is capable of playing at a much higher level across the board with better coaching, structure and tactics.
Yes i agree about the coaching, or lack of, and the tactics.
