American politics

The ranting and raving over the HT show at the NFL is a weird look, loads of loss of head over it

I was very underwhelmed when they announced it was Bad Bunny at the HT show, but I was pleasantly surprised and I thought it was a really good performance. Barely understood a word of it but I didn’t necessarily need to. I could understand what he was saying about community, family etc. As usual, Trump is focusing on the wrong thing.

Again, I think your assumption is too great.
The US has vast, vast areas where attention is not paid or (worse still) it is easily manipulated. Joe Rogan became a truthsayer for many (he was not alone).

Those rural areas are probably more clued up on Epstein than anywhere else.

The rats continue to flee his sinking ship, hopefully Trump’s intention to cancel the mid-terms will be thwarted so he’ll be royally routed

MTG is interesting. She is a piece of brick, no doubt about it. She is on the redemption tour now , but it is all self-serving. She sees the end of MAGA looming and is positioning herself to get through it.

In what sense?
What makes you say that?
I want to understand your perspective before entering a discussion.

I am sure there were people on the left who cared about it. But until about 6 months ago when Trump engaged in his cover up attempt, Epstein and the release of the files was predominantly an issue of importance to the Libertarian & right leaning conservatives. Both in terms of the public and independent media. As an example, prior to Trump becoming President again, Epstein is only mentioned 26 times on this forum between Nov 2020 to 2024.

You joke about Rogan, but his audience are the type of people that cared about Epstein prior to this year and Trumps dwindling popularity is largely due to this issue.

People with those views live everywhere but are most common in rural areas.

Where did I joke about Rogan?
I was stating a fact, the same fact that started to ring very, very true once Farage got Cameron to buy the Brexit referendum and showed Bannon that this sort of thing could actually be pulled off!
I have to also say, I think your read of the Epstein situation is wrong (I believe you are buying a narrative which has been served up on that one, there's a counter-narrative led by Ro Khanna which points out how many times transparency was sought and pushed for as early as 2019 from several folks in congress).

I think it's also probably worth noting that perhaps one of the bigger reasons you didn't see as much focus on Epstein between 2020 and 2024 was a) because there was a global pandemic which was taking a lot of the limelight, b) the internet was busy generating the sort of 'information' which was absorbed tenfold by billions of people globally and has seen us land in the current world we live in, and c) there was an election being run. In that specific context, the likes of Rogan became vital parts of the election narratives being pushed by both sides, a narrative that didn't especially put pressure for the full Epstein files to be released.

Personally, I think the darkest element of the Epstein files is that regardless of whose name is linked, and what details are shown even behind redactions, nothing seems to trigger much of anything other than a gasp before everyone is on to something else. I don't care what side of the political spectrum you're on, or how 'cool and famous' you might be, I think all those involved with Epstein and Maxwell should be outed and punished.

It is a damning indictment of the state of humanity really, just sad and awful.

(It's probably only fair I disclose that I am an ex-pat myself (nearly 40 years) who gets back home a few times a year - hence I still manage to catch my share of games over time.)

I have lived in the US since 2005 when I was 19 so the Brexit references go right over my head. Though I think your implication of voters being tricked to vote conservative is an exaggeration. I am sure it happens but it’s not too different to those who suggest the Dems promises free stuff so you will vote for them.

I know dozens and dozens of colleagues and friends who were traditionally Democrat voters who just don’t feel like the party represents them or fights for them. And I think most voters are motivated by disgruntlement which is typically valid in either direction.

Epstein files are an example of that. I don’t think it’s that’s people don’t care, it’s that people don’t have any faith it’s going to be properly investigated.

The sex crimes doesn’t seem to have a real smoking gun but the financial stuff does. Bizzare that is threatening to bring down the UK government while it’s barley caused a scratch in the US.

The Ro Khanna & Massie alliance gives me some hope. Convinced if they ran for president with the commitment that they would have the other as their VP it would get a lot of traction.

(Based in the US or somewhere else?
I used to get back to a few games a year but have a 5 year old and a 5 month old so those plans on hold atm. Do have tickets for England v Croatia though.)

Again, not sure where the implication was that people were 'tricked' necessarily. What I absolutely will say -and stand by- is that with social media becoming such an important tool of communication, it is easier than ever to mass market specific messages and ideas to large groups of people. It is a combination of emotional and actual manipulation; this was always 'campaigning' to an extent, but it is easier than ever to direct attentions on very specific topics and make them a central point of a campaign/ideology you wish to force on people as a 'reason' for their situation. Of course voters are guided by disgruntlement, however where they receive the fuel for theirs becomes very, very important.

Regarding Epstein, do you have faith it will be investigated properly?

Yes, I scratch my head in dismay too. I mean, this should supercede all party lines. Whatever side of the spectrum, a nonce is a nonce is a nonce and they should be brought to justice!

I am US based mate.
