American politics

Not following US politics too much so will ask those more knowledgeable. Who is the next President in peoples opinions? Trump running again? Biden looking to frail and showing too many signs of poor mindset to retain?

It is a lottery.

The recent DOJ/Trump thing plays into the latter's hand. IMO, the timing could not be better to get him to preach to his collective and be a martyr. Dangerous. Biden is trying to be 'tougher' but I think his story is written and people won't buy him. Harris never found a foothold as the viable ascendant and was also further killed off as a potential runner by her being female and black (sadly true). I think a lot depends on whether Gavin Newsom in CA makes a run. He has the charisma, character, policies and a shade of dirt/deviency that I could see winning over swing states/same parts of the country as Biden won. I would look to chart what he does; I think he could do it.

While this indictment will fuel Trump’s hardcore supporters, the fact that it is based on hush-money payments to a porn star is going to cause serious in-roads into some big areas of his vote when he last won (e.g. the evangelical Christians).

With further indictments to follow, it’s likely that many who did lend him their vote before will be tired of the unlawful nonsense that surrounds him.

Not to say it won’t be reasonably close, though.

nah, they are all hypocrites

thought this was funny, originally on twitter,

who are they going to believe, a fake blonde with big tits, or Stormy Daniels?

This indictment is actually about the coverup and related financial crimes, not the payment to Daniels even though the media keep framing it this way. The evangelicals have accepted far worse than this from Trump already. This payoff is not new news to them really so if they were jumping ship for moral reasons it would have happened before now I would think. They don't care that he is the human embodiment of everything their creed is against.

So I think this indictment will get him a little bump in his numbers from MAGA core voters is all. The so-called swing voters will bleed away as they have been doing as each subsequent indictment is revealed.

Will he be the GOP nominee? I'd say yes because as much as the GOP/FOX hierarchy detest the man and know he is bad for their election chances, an opinion they freely share in private, they can't break from him because he's got such a hold on their core voters/viewers. They are fudged if they do and fudged if they don't. Health permitting Biden will be re-elected easily would be my prediction.

I think it is dangerous. They need to stop giving this clam the fuel to fire up his dotards!
Considering Trump's fixation on Time magazine covers this is chefs' kiss territory.

If you are referring to the wider media coverage of him then you have a point. It is one I generally agree with - stop giving him free airtime and normalisng his behavior. However, today is an exception IMO. Today was cathartic to see him arrested for a lot of people. Today the fudging arsehole experienced something he has never had to experience before and that is some measure of accountability.

It has to be done, he needs to be accountable, but he is using the circus to whip up his bozos and bleed their pockets...

That's true but the circus is gonna happen anyway, for one reason or another. With every new indictment, and each more serious than the last, the howls of indignation will grow louder and louder and the grift machine will endlessly separate the rubes from their money. Reality will break through for some eventually but many are too far gone down the rabbit hole to climb back out. And I'm struggling to generate any empathy for those people as they have so willingly embraced the bigoted, divisive message that Trump and his GOP buddies have been pushing. Let them bleed.

Can’t say I’ve been impressed by Biden’s performance in N Ireland and the Republic. Hopefully he is encouraged to feel that he’s done what he needs to in this term and that the US’s interests are best served by letting someone else run for the Democrats next time.

I think he's done pretty well. He dangled a financial carrot and put a bit of pressure on the DUP to put their big boy pants on. They probably won't but I'm not sure he could have done much more on that front. He also more or less said not to fudge with GFA in any way which wasn't even a coded warning to Sunak and co. The stuff in the Republic is just for his domestic audience, the Irish diaspora and DC power players, and a bit of fun for himself.

He is gonna run again and I've no problem with that if he is up to it. His list of accomplishments in the 1st couple of years is staggeringly good. His age is obviously a concern but in a fight with Trump he'll come out on top easily and that is not given for someone else. Harris after a slow start is finding her voice but she is not ready to take on Trump.

Luce has a good read on it in the FT ...

The balance of the visit felt less than sensitive to the Protestant community in Northern Ireland.

He’s also got to the stage where it’s almost possible to see the cogs turning as he speaks.
He’s been a great politician but it feels right that someone younger should step forward.

I am judging him on what has accomplished rather than how he is perceived. He's been the best in terms of accomplishments in my lifetime. And yes he's way too old. But despite his age he is still the most likely Democrat to beat a MAGA candidate, Trump or otherwise. And for that reason he'll get the nomination unopposed I would think.

Biden was not my personal choice last time out. That was Warren, who was head and shoulders policy-wise above everyone else, but I've come to accept since then that he was probably the only candidate that could have beaten Trump in 2020. It was something Trump recognized early doors too, which is why he went after Biden before he even announced he was running. If Biden can beat Trump, DeSantis, or whomever in 2024 and then maybe hand the reins over to his VP I'll take that, thank him for his service to humanity, and wish him well in his dotage.

As for rising stars in the blue corner, there is plenty to choose from - Whitmer or Newsom are the cream of the crop IMO but someone from leftfield might step up and take the nomination in 2028.
