American politics

OMG, that debate, Biden is toast. He has no chance of beating Trump now. They need to replace him, he has proved himself to be unfit to run again, he is cognitively impaired

Ruth Bader Ginsburg all over again. Democrats don’t know when enough is enough. Obama should speak to Biden and try and get him to step down. Who replaces him I have no idea.

Time and time again the Dems misread the room.
This debate was NEVER a policy debate, it was all theatre, all performative. Biden is obvioudsly not a great public sopeaker anymore, especially in the long-format.
His team set him up to fail.
Give him short stingers and several repetitive points which he can cycle into any question. What do they do? Load him down with loads of (accurate) stats and figures on the political meat of things which sees him stumble to get his words across. It was unbelievable! Trump is Trump, of course he's going to lie lie lie, but he does it with a veneer of assured performance. As for people complaining about the structure of the debate, everyone knew what it was, the Dems apparently called for an early debate, so prepare! I think Biden was sorely let down by his advisors, unless the man himself defied all advice and preparation to go rogue and stroll through the weeds getting lost. I think in terms of the cheap optical metrics it was a disaster for him. Sadly. He has the best political brain by a huge shot, yet motormouth gets heard. Project 25 didn't get a whisper, and when Trump said that illegal immigrants were taking black jobs, why did he not ask him to define what a 'black job' is because it clearly showed that Trump has deep deep prejudices.

The problem with political debates in general is that nobody is there to debate. It's all about reciting rehearsed talking points, regardless of what the question is.

I disagree, the Dems, know it is time for him to step down but the problem is that he is stubborn.

I agree that Obama and other top party members need to talk to him and get him to do the right thing. Failing that he will cost them the election.

Parachuting in a relatively unknown at this late stage could do that too.
Yep. Biden for all his fragilities has good numbers among white voters (they need about 40% of those) and the black vote (he has most of that tied up). Someone else would not be guaranteed anywhere close. This is a tough position for the dems but it is not a simple as putting in someone else in. There are way more factors at play than just the 'not old' factor. I think they'll let the dust settle and see where they are in the polls. Bizarrely he might even get a sympathy bounce (is one prediction I've seen). Anyway having one bad 'debate' is not a mortal blow as the electorate has the memory of goldfish. They've forgotten Trump more or less killed 200k people with his handling of the pandemic.

The problem is that his cognitive decline will only get worse. If he is this bad now it will only get worse.

Also, importantly there are very many "known" candidates who have the charm, charisma, intelligence and political know how to best Trump. Off the top of my head I would suggest that both Gavin Newsome and Gretchen Whitmer are better options

The problem is there are people who will vote for Biden and Trump come what may. The issue are the undecided, and more importantly the swing states. Right now Biden looks unfit to lead for 4 more years.

I agree he won't last the 4 years, but he doesn't have to. He just has to get elected. Folks are also voting for the first black woman president really. The decision is whether he is more likely to beat Trump or someone else is and it is not that clear either way. And he is no more in cognitive decline than Trump is, who has clear signs of dementia. A juiced up Trump won that debate using a gish gallop technique, a nightmare for stutterers most of all, especially old ones trying to counter with detailed facts. That was a mess but 90mins doesn't wipe 4 nightmare years under Trump and 3.5 mostly good ones under Biden. In a month or so I'm thinking the needle will not have changed all that much. They are very little undecided at this point.

The consequences are so huge as well - 2 countries (ukraine and palestine) may soon cease to exist because of the hybris of a foolish old man. This is potentially a von Hindenberg situation (the foolish old guy who gave Hitler the keys to the wheel)

The Gish gallop (/ˈɡɪʃ ˈɡæləp/) is a rhetorical technique in which a person in a debate attempts to overwhelm their opponent by providing an excessive number of arguments with no regard for the accuracy or strength of those arguments.

I'd never heard of that. I agree, that is Trump to a T. I've had similar happen to me in arguments, I'm trying to counter bullsh*t arguments with facts and proper responses but someone is just spilling forth an overwhelming torrent of lies and rubbish so each point gets lost.

That debate was like sending a 6 year old out to fight a 36 year old.

It is clear to me that the Dems put Biden out in front of cameras to bring things to a head and to make it super clear that he is not at all fit to lead thus forcing him to step aside and let someone else take over.
People won't remember the facts of the debate, but they will remember that Biden looked like he should be in a care home with someone feeding him his food.
I hate Trump, but my GHod surely there is a human in America that is better than Biden to challenge Trump?
