turns out the three top guys in my office floor are west ham fans ...and its taken off. i'd like to say what i really think of them but there is aq hierachy in place

they just stuck this in my face

http://soccerdelirium.com/2010/04/28/net-spend-of-each-premier-league-club/

very nice. saying we should be 4th etc etc

oddly enough, one of them REALLY believes that tottenham are their official rivals? i dont get it...he's basing that on proximity? west ham being technically closer to spurs than scum are and that historically scum arent our rivals?

i threw in millwall and apprently becuase they havent played them frequently recently they say that they cant be their rivals

gonna be tense at work. i almost said "fudge off!!" a few times

“Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.”

Ugh, pricks. Here we go again.

Tell your buddies that that table takes no account of where the money comes from. Tottenham have spent a lot of money over the years... In fact we have spent a lot of money BADLY over the years. But the pertinent question is "whose was that money?". The answer is yours and mine.

Tottenham Hotspur is the model of a well run football club in financial terms, the money spent on players has been well calculated and is from the proceeds of player sales, merchandising, sponsorship, gate receipts... Real, viable revenue streams. None of that money has come from the greasy pockets of porn kings, the exploitation of post Soviet Russia or an oil sheikh's "flash cash" pocket.

That's point one, and your dingdonghead spammer mates can go choke on that point. Second point is that we are in competition with West Ham like Eric the Eel is in competition with Michael Phelps. Just because they think they have a chance, it doesn't mean anyone else does. I could wax lyrical on that, but what's the point. Yoyo club with a couple of gimps at the helm.

I actually like West Ham and a lot of their supporters apart from the ones who seem to think Tottenham and West Ham have anything in common apart from vague geography.

How about their top ITK:

Since 1992, seriously?!

It ignores a whole lot of factors. Increased valuation of players, increased wages, increased turnover and profit, european competition, etc etc etc.

How many top 5 finishes in the last few years for Spurs? how much debt for West Ham? how much do they spend on wages, players like Ljungberg and Dyer who barely played.

Or Guti who chose to retire instead of join West Ham.

We were weren't we?!

Anyway as if they're our main rivals, they're barely a rival - how can they be when they spend half the time in the poxy Championship?

So let me get this straight, we're fourth on the spending chart and finished 4th, we regularly finish around there and they are 19th on the spending chart and have to fight off relegation every year (except when actually in the championship). Tell them they'd love to have our spending power and be up there with us. Mugs!

Ask them if they include the £5.5 million fine from the PL or the £20 milllion compensation to Sheffield United in their net spend.

The net spend on transfers is a silly number. Player costs has to include wages, as mentioned above, net spend on transfers, payments to agents, fines and any associated legal fees.

Note: The West Ham wages don't include the £5.5m fine or £20m compensation.

Since that is the Premiership net spend table ask them how their years in the Championship were factored into things. Maybe ask if there is another, combined Premiership and Championship table for teams that frequent both divisions.

I like the wage thing. Point is that spending a relatively low percentage of our turnover on wages allows us to have a sustainable net transfer spend each season, especially when combined with the club being financially well run overall and having a large fan base, both in England and internationally. What this, and the actual Premiership tables in recent years, show is that we should have been even closer to the top in recent years if not for Chelsea and City enjoying the good fortunes of financial doping. You can also tell them that West Ham too could have been closer to the top, all it would have taken was a Jesus sized miracle.

I have not laughed at, and agreed with, a post like this in a long, long time.

Playing at Olympic Stadium is a wonderful dream for us, admits West Ham boss Allardyce

West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce admits it will be a 'dream come true' if the club move into the Olympic Stadium.

After enjoying the memorable exploits of the British team at the Olympics, Allardyce is even more excited about the prospect of the Hammers playing at the new stadium.

'It would be a dream come true and there is nothing I can say more certain than that,' said Allardyce.

'Everyone who is a part of West Ham United knows how much it would benefit the club if we were offered the chance.

'We’ve all seen the atmosphere, the surroundings, the walk up and it would take this club to another level if our bid is accepted.'

Allardyce is a lover of all sport, and has thoroughly enjoyed the Games.

'For me, the Bradley Wiggins story is a great one, you can physically see the difference between this Tour de France and the previous one.

'It wasn’t the gym, extra training and it wasn’t physiological, he managed to lose three or four kilos so his body could stand the endurance at a lighter weight on the mountain climbs of the tour.

'That takes huge dedication and is the kind of commitment our lads need to show in order to gain that extra advantage.'

The club sent lifelong fan, rower Mark Hunter, a special message ahead of his final on Saturday.

'I know Mark is competing in the twos but he also rows individually,' said Allardyce.

'It’s to his credit for the way in which he motivates himself to his particular sport.

'We come in as a team and that means we can have a lot of fun, his training can be very lonely and pretty boring, but he still motivates himself to achieve his goal.

'We have to do the same and make sure we don’t become complacent, ensuring we get the maximum out of every training session.'

That table in the OP looks pretty accurate to me - based on spend Spurs qualifying for CL and West Ham relegated :)
Sums up the true positions of the clubs!

I don't know why you need ammo when we're an established Premier League challenging for the top four whilst they're a yo-yo club

I remember having a bit of banter with a West Ham fan a few years ago (just after Lasagnagate) and got a bit of a battering if I'm honest. Mainly because he was a loud mouthy type who wouldnt shut up, and wouldn't let the argument become reasonable.

And therein has been my solution in these situations since! Find your key points, stick to them and make them all that matter. If the other guy goes down a route that he's got the upper hand in, just be dismissive. If it means you come across as an arrogant spurs fan well so be it. You ARE better them ;)

This lot have a weak, weak argument. It's some out of date, trivial table that means absolutely nothing. When they are at West Ham-Chelsea with all the fire that goes with that, and Chelsea are yelling five-nil, five-nil, or top of the league or whatever, with the spammers fans come back with "we are more economical than you"? No, the info they are given is as useful as which Premiership team is most carbon neutral. Means diddly squat.

The main things that matter in the game, for a fan, is last result between the teams, league performance, honours history. We have the upper hand in all things, and to be honest none of it looks like changing.

So when these small fry start up I'd be battering them on the past: always take six points off them, they are a Championship team, whufc= our feeder club, they get our scraps in return - the present: we're a top four side, good luck in your relegation battle and the future: running track running track running track. Lasagnagate is gone thanks to our last CL campaign, so they really have nothing on us.

Oh and ask them if they want another go with Bentley.

Wasn't Wayne Bridge on 90k a week at West Ham?

Nothing wrong with them perceiving us as rivals, I enjoy it when we play them.
