Joao Paulinha

I reckon if Bayern had Bentancur, and Spurs had Palhinha.
We would be keen on getting Bentancur in, to replace the ageing Palhinha and provide a bit more sparkle.

I suppose the view is, that we sell Biss and loan in "Palhinha with an option" with no intention of taking up the option.

And extend Bentancur's contract.

That enables Gray and Bergvall to grow a year older.

I don't hate it but it doesn't feel like an exciting step forwards, it feels a bit stodgy meh like when Liverpool got Wataru Endo. OK, OK Palhinha is a lot better player than that, just feels a bit old.

Agree a year loan would be better for us.

I agree that he's not the most exciting player as such, doesn't do many sparkly things. But would be a very functional player. And more importantly he's an actual DM whereas Bentancur and Bissouma aren't imo and haven't been able to develop into that either (so far).

A loan with an option would be good in my opinion too. Time will tell how much time Gray and Bergvall need, assuming they do step up, but having a proven player, experience and a good fit for a while could be very useful. I think both Gray and Bergvall would find it quite useful to play next to him.

My preference would be someone that's more of a playmaker, but not sure that's possible (also wanting someone very solid defensively).

When I see posts like this I remember the Gary McAllister transfer in 2000 when people were saying "no way" should we consider him (on a Bosman) because he was 35. He went to Liverpool, spent 2 years and won 5 trophies!!

Palhinha's game is not based on pace and he is proven in the Premiership.

Wages are a factor.

It annoys me that people call him Paulinha rather than Palhinha.
Even this thread title is wrong.

At the Reading game the Spurs fan behind me was talking about "Kudos".
Predictably he didn't know who Devine and Donley were.

That's another one, Donley, not Donely nor Donelly nor Donnelly.
You make a good point, billet

Isn't Kudus pronounced Kudos? Or is it Kudoos?

Confirmed we’re in talks about a loan. Makes sense as a stop gap and instantly becomes our best pure holder (if fit).

This red card machine narrative is fake news, as is yellow card magnet. Averaged 1 in every 3 at Fulham, which isn’t low, but given not one red card suggests he has intelligence to walk the line of playing on the edge effectively.

Confirmed by who?

I'd still start Bentancur over him at DM for the majority of games. But he would be a good option for Liv/Arse/City/Chel away and CL games against other super league teams.

He'd kill us in games where we'd expect to have the majority of possession.
I don't think his passing is as limited as that, particularly over shorter distances. It's not as good as Bentancur's, but he offers a hell of a lot more defensively.

Broadly I agree with the point above - there's a different role for different players depending on the opposition.

I hope so, Bents is a far better player when he has freedom to play further forward. He has done a decent job playing deeper but imo he is wasted there.

I don't think so. He doesn't have the legs of Sarr or Bergvall for the #8. I think settling him into a ballplaying DM in a double pivot for this second half of his career would suit him really well

Or we could rotate players to match the opposition

That was my original point. Play Bentancur (DM) and Bergvall (8) against most opponents where we would dominate possession. Then play Paulinha (DM) and Bentancur (8) in the very toughest games where we'll have less of the ball. With Gray (DM) and Sarr (8) as the midweek combo/pushing on to challenge.

Well as they say its all ab out opinions and i will have to disagree with that.
