The Official 2017/18 Premier League Thread

It amazes me how Shelvey seems to be so highly rated, I've seen a fair bit of him and he looks poor every time. The narrative is that if he had the tempremant then he'd be playing at a higher level. Well I call BS! If he had the ability he'd be playing at a higher level, he was well and truly found out at Liverpool and looks poor against Prem opposition.

I always thought exactly the same about Barton as well, sooooo overrated!

Guardiola looking on track to making City the first club to join Europe's elite since... since...? I genuinely struggle here.

When was the last time an English club came up against one of the 2-3 best clubs in Europe and didn't look the underdog?

Would have been Liverpool in the 80s I guess. I can't remember it in my life-time. When I was a kid, Milan were the superclub, with Barca next (Romario, Hagi, Stoichkov etc).

Then again, the Man Utd team with Ronaldo that won the league and European Cup double was an excellent team. I know they beat Chelsea in the final, did they play any of the giant clubs en-route? Was that the year they beat Barca in the semis? They played it like an underdog though iirc.

So yeah, I guess it'd be Liverpool.

For sure a decent record. But that's not what I asked. At no point during that run did I feel that they came up against one of the truly top clubs inn Europe (Real, Barca, Bayern in recent years) as anything other than an underdog.

If City played Barca or Real now you don't think they'd be the underdog?

He did say City are "looking on track" not that they are there yet. I think that's fair enough, they look to be heading in that direction where they can dominate a game, even against one of those top sides. It will be interesting to see them play one of them and find out.

*edit -- if not dominate, then play their own game at least.
