Looking to buy a New Desktop PC

Spursman

Neil Sullivan
Just after some advice.

Im in the market for a new desktop PC. I used to be quite up to speed with what to look for in terms of spec. I could probably build my own but i just dont have the time for it at the moment. The all in ones look nice but what about upgrades for them in the future? dont really want to buy a laptop and i like a large screen.

Essentially i just need it for general stuff with a bit of video editing and website building. So don't plan to game on it or anything. I want it to be quite slick to use and a bit future proof. I have been using my old PC for about 8 years now and its a windows vista PC with 4gb memory and AMD dual core 4000 processor, 2.11 GHz. Its ok and still works fine but lots of new program's i want to use wont install due to missing files. And windows and chrome is no longer supported on vista.

I dont really want to spend more than £300 (not including a new monitor) i have looked at the usual places like PC world etc but what about ebay? seen a few companies on there who are quite reasonable and offer warranty on their computers.

What should i be looking for in terms of specs? 2 TB hard drive plus, what processor and how much RAM?

Thanks

buy a mac, my Imac has lasted 7 years and is still going strong and I've never had to buy anti virus/spyware stuff etc, buy refurbished if thats your budget

never really thought of a mac before. I want a desktop so seen an imac referb for £520. Still a bit too pricey at that rate

buy a dell and you'll replace it in under 3 years, you get what you pay for is so applicable when buying computer hardware.

My 2009 iMac began to struggle after about a year then just after the guarantee had expired the HD died. I managed to install a replacement manually but in doing so lost some functions (eg latest version of iMovie I'd paid c£80 to install). Not long after that the version it was on increasingly lost compatibility with various apps (eg Google Chrome) and could not be upgraded. It has basically been crippled ever since.

However I hear current models CAN be upgraded to a limited extent so maybe worth revisiting.

you paid £80 for imovie?

you can download previous purchases via the app store

you may need to update your OS to install more recent versions of chrome

It came with a basic version of iMovie, I needed the all-singing latest version. The OS on the 2009 iMac I bought was the last of those that could not be upgraded. Sods law I found out that all subsequent versions (ie released later than Spring 2009) could.

Sorry I'm not at home and cannot remember but it was definitely incompatible with El Capitan along with all other upgrades I've attemped to install. I spent hours researching workarounds but kept hitting a brick wall, ie the out-of-date OS. The Apple site confirmed my version could not be upgraded.

I've just watched the new film Viva Amiga, and now want an AmigaONE X1000 (http://www.a-eon.com/?page=x1000). A computer for humans, rather than humans designed for computers

Computers could have been so much better if Amiga had of carried the day, like it should have done, over IBM and Apple
