Josh Onomah

Really? Are you Onomah's dad, brother or wife by any chance?!? I thought he was anonymous throughout and, as always, didn't seem to be applying himself. He needs a rocket up his backside

That's your opinion and I have mine - there are plenty of people who don't agree with you.

Yeah a 19 year old playing at anfield didn't tey - guess you could tell by his body language right? Btw when is jan's move away happening?

How many times have you watched him to apply such a blanket - and dare I say lazy - statement?

That's probably because winks and Onomah have been on 6-10k a week since 17 (that will have been increased), train in beautiful surroundings and never have to lift a finger or think individually. fudge poch and his view on this - a 6 month loan in jan for both to a championship club would do wonders for them imo.

Have been watching the 'second string' when possible and all I hear is "results dont matter it all about learning"........I'm far from convinced by this. I would be looking at the academy coaching setup and get these lads some real world experiences and teaching them to win!

Most of his 25 appearances for the first team, and probably a couple for development/ youth teams. I just don't get why he saunters around the pitch. We've had other youth players, Jake Livermore for example (who I wasn't a huge fan of), who haven't been blessed with great footballing talent comparatively, but you know that they're giving 110% and maximising their chances of succeeding. Have no problem with someone from the youth team being crap, or less able, but coming into the first team as long as they're making the most of their ability. Ryan Mason - had decent ability, but probably not enough to be a regular at Spurs, but no-one could doubt his effort and therefore even those who didn't think he was good enough didn't question his application. Townsend generally worked hard, but ultimately was lacking in end product and a brain, but always worked hard. Onomah seems to be happy being on the periphery of games

I'd cut Winks some slack for last night - he was playing in the centre 2 of a 4-2-3-1 up against a 4-3-3. So one man fewer in the middle and against a team which presses. In the circumstances, I think he did ok

That's seemed the way to me as well; In fact often @Yoof seems to have alluded to that; @Yoof did you see that game yesterday and was Onomah's performance an example of the 'coasting' you have mentioned previously?

This - not sure whats going on with some of our 'younger' players they are looking pampered and a tad soft.

You do make a good point, i think for some its too much too soon and for others the hype that surrounds them is sometimes a bad thing.

I'm of the results don't matter school, as the strength of teams fluctuate so much, what is important is performance and reaction of the individuals. Win the PL2 would be pointless if you cannot produce a first team regular.

I like and respect different views especially when they are expressed without being rude/silly.

This season we have given PL minutes to four academy graduates. Liverpool have so far not played anyone from their own academy, though there were a few that got the odd appearance last season (not including those that were poached from abroad at age 17-18). Every time someone is promoted to the first team or sold off there will be a slight drop in quality until more come through.

United still have a lot of academy products hanging around the PL from Fergie's time (how many ex-United players turned managers has there been? They've all taken on a few), but both us and Southampton are currently the two PL clubs with the most academy players in our own first team squads. We've both provided quite a few for other teams as well. Some real in-depth  journalism here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/fo...emier-League-graduates-players-come-club.html

My take on Onomah after watching him last night (and I haven't read through the thread so don't know if something already aired on here) is that he looks to have the talent required to make it at the top level, but I'm not sure that he has the desire to do so. There were a few occasions where I felt Onomah could've really committed himself to the press and put Liverpool in trouble, some other occasions where he held back so that he wouldn't end up having to go in for a 50-50, other occasions when he seemed to purposely take up a position on an attacking goalside of an opponent in possession instead of the defensive goal side (i.e. avoiding having to make a tackle) and I also noticed a few occasions where he didn't put in the effort to track his opposite number's runs forward.

I think he is a player who is in need of a loan move. The failings that I have listed above would not be tolerated at a lower level of football where the players can depend on their win bonuses to pay their mortgage or put their kids through school or whatever. I think the player needs to go into that environment so that we can see whether he is prepared to put in the dirty work. Last night it seemed to me as though he thought himself above having to do so.

Tough crowd.
A tough gig deserves a tough crowd. We want to be a top 4 (or better) Premier League team competing for European trophies. That means our players have ot be good enough to play at that level. I get that Onomah is only 19 years old and I get that he has good ability. The problem is that the game is about much more than just natural ability, it is at least 50% desire. I have seen Onomah play for both Spurs and England in age group football and he coasts through games (partly because he is able to as he is better than that level). The problem is that coasting through games can become habit forming. I think he needs to be properly tested and needs to be put into an environment where his peers will not accept anything but his maximum output, which I don't think he gave last night, If it so happens that he did give his all last night then I don't think he will make it as a player at the level THFC.

Tough crowd.

He's made 25 senior appearances for Spurs now, albeit the majority of those will be sub appearances, so he's getting to the point where he'll start to be judged on what he contributes rather than just tolerated because he's young. At the moment he seems to be heading to be more of a Bostock / Parrett output (much acclaimed young player who fails at senior level), rather than a Mason/Townsend/Livermore (decent academy player who will have a career in the championship / PL but not good enough for where Spurs are now) let alone a Ledley King.

All (well, most) of us will support anyone who puts on a Spurs shirt but are entitled to an opinion, and I think more of us are questioning Onomah's desire / work-rate / application etc

We've also got to remember that he is playing totally out of position. From all accounts, he is best in a central role, further back by where Dembele or Winks would operate. Playing on the wing really doesn't seem to play to his strengths, especially when he's coming into a side with massive changes made to it.

I'll hold off judgment until he gets more minutes with a more settled team and in a position that is naturally suited to him. I, for one, will support all of our academy players and hope to see plenty more of Josh this season.

I like him, he covers a lot of ground and reads things very well, he's often where the ball is going rather than chasing it.

He could do with a bit more composure on the ball and moving it on a bit earlier sure but we didn't get many people up the field in support of the attack last night so options were limited.
