Paul Mitchell - Head of Recruitment and Analysis

thinking about this more - Mitchell's job is to scout players and to identify targets (among other things like track the progress of academy players i presume) but he's not a DoF who is given a budget and tasked with the responsibility of buying/selling players and ultimately shaping the squad (assumption on my part but pretty sure that's the case) - so with that in mind im not sure it would be of any concern of his whether we decide to follow up on his recommendations. His job is to scout the players - not sign them.

also the recent change in job titles for both Pochettino and McDermott could suggest that his role has become a little marginalized - going by the statements made it seems he has built a scouting/analyzing department here and perhaps now both Pochettino and McDermott are happier to oversee this area, rather than have a go-between in Mitchell.

What you say makes sense. But re the bold bit, I could imagine a feeling of frustration growing if recommendations are regularly proving fruitless. It might make you wonder 'what's the point'. All speculation, of course.

Yeah I could see that happening too tbf however I think that after two seasons here there hasn't really been enough opportunity for that kind of feeling to develop and in terms of what is being reported re Batshuayi being the major cause of ill feeling then it doesn't really stack up to me

I agree. Surely his job spec was never to identify top price well known Belgian international strikers, where we would have to outbid the oil rich clubs on wages. I could fudging do that! Messi! £2m a week and a £250m transfer fee - yes, go do it!

Sniffer bargains was surely how he was meant to pay for himself and justify the role.
If so, the dragging on of the gorgeous George deal does seem a more likely story.

didn't poch recommend him in the first place. intrigueing. has poch closed ranks with levy? or is this a sign otherwise ?

also there's speculation about the long drawn out case of n'koudo being something that mitchell is embroilled in.

i can't help but wonder if the players being cut e.g. prtichard, bentaleb has got something to do with it too

report that Michy to Chelsea was one reason Mitchell decided to leave. pure speculation of course. but if there is truth in this, he should have known that we would not pay such high wages (apparently more than Hugo or Arry) and his recommendations to Poch & Levy should take that factor into account.

its not that Batshuayi simply went to Chelsea now, its the fact that we could have done the deal sooner when the wages and transfer fee would have been less.

The more deals are delayed, the more chance other clubs will step in with bigger offers.

In Batshuayi's case the rumours were very strong before the euros that he had agreed to join us, wages sorted, and the transfer fee was all that was left. The deal could have been done back then.

Mitchell knows the budget restrictions at Spurs, he knows the type of player he has to unearth as a potential signing. Having done this, and provided options for the positions Poch wants strengthening, it must be then frustrating when others charged with getting the deals over the line dont succeed.

No. Poch said that it was Levy's decision to bring Mitchell in when he joined.

But was it not also the case (or strongly rumoured) that OM were holding out for a specific fee and were not open to negotiation as they needed that sum to fulfil certain financial requirements of their domestic league? If OM were asking more than we felt he was worth.and there was no room for negotiation, then I don't see how the deal could have been completed only a month or so earlier? I could understand Mitchell being frustrated at the situation. I could imagine Levy and Poch would have felt the same. But if that was the reason for Mitchell's resignation, or the straw that broke the camel's back, then maybe he (Mitxhell) was not the right fit for our club.

Remember the interview with McDermott, where he talked about how Poch put him on his toes and made him deliver. Even though we have the best academy in the country, Poch made it clear he expected more. McDermott was made to feel he had to raise his game to keep pace with Poch's ambitions.

We've seen Poch be totally ruthless with players not delivering, so there's a possibility it was him who called the shots here.

Based on what facts? Speculation?

No deal is done till its done, I have as much evidence to say Batshuayi would never come to Spurs as any of us have to say he would?

Ok, so PM recommends him a year ago, Levy goes to see them and they say no deal as he is too vital a player at this time, our interest alerts West Ham, who bid up of 20m (they made that bid public) and Chelsea finally swoop as a total package, big club for Bats and willing to pay the inflated wages.

If us not successfully signing Batshuayi is reason to quit your job (and I am basing that purely on people speculating on here) then I suggest that PM needs to grow the fudge up

What I really love about this is that if you take the Batshuayi example, any clubs worth their salt would be looking at him once he posted a 20+goal season, which he did back at Standard, thats a fact in football, its the easiest and laziest trick in the book for most scouts. When you add into the mix agents and clubs and the rumour mill that surrounds players its 10x more complex than a PM saying to a chairman "Get him he is good" and them going out and getting them. The day to day politics of clubs and agents positioning their player for the best deal means that clubs, like us are better served wiping their nose and moving on to the next deal.

That, as I say was PM job, his sole job, if Levy goes away and says "Couldn't do that deal but find the next one and we will have a fair crack" then that is what he should be doing, its his SOLE ROLE, that is his bread and butter. And its laughable to the extreme as Levy has invested in the team in the last three years, so its not as if he has black balled every move that someone in the club has made.

Has Poch been backed? yes he has and that should count for more than Levy having to worry about signing players JUST BECAUSE it might upset PM.

I don't think that Mitchell's job was simply to identify +20 strikers in European leagues. The analysis is to identify which ones will fit in our team, who are likely to maintain good form (or are under performing) and represent good value.

How we or others identify a player isn't in question here, I am saying that because of goals players we are pretending to be "under the radar" will be on others for sure.....what I am questioning is the reaction or speculation at frustration to not being able to sign people. If we used Analysis to identify Bat and Chelsea used goals it amounts to the same thing, he was on the radar and we lost out. What is in question here is the reaction of staff should we miss out on targets.

My mates 7 and he has 5 clubs on his back and one from Europe interested in long term already. That's 5 resignations in the offing if they cant sign them.

I think that people are just filling in the gaps.
