Ryan Mason

it's common to send players to more industrial leagues to toughen them up a bit, the benefits come in the training sessions as much as the matches and the conclusion of a "successful loan" can be measured very differently by the two clubs involved

Yes he did and then came back and had two fantastic seasons. As a Spurs fan I'm hoping Mason proves me wrong and can do the same, all I'm trying to do is lower everyone's expectations that Mason is going to be a world beater with some cruel facts that may (yes only may) prove he's not.

Who has said he is a world beater other than GB???

What some of us have said is he is a useful squad player

What some others have said is Isn't good enough for a top half / top 8 team which is factually incorrect

You highlighted his loans as a negative thing... And in that subject he has had roughly 3 years injured where he may have had more prestigious loans. Maybe those injuries will drive him on... Maybe his lack of certain skills will hinder him. Who knows. Right now he is a spurs player and he always seems to give it all for us IMO. When he has played for us we age by done bad either averaging a top 4 position both times

The statistics say other.
8 starts and 14 sub appearances hardly says "key part of a successful squad that has achieved our highest League position in 25 years." to me.

What I want to see from him is for him to have a breakthrough season like Kane had where he emerges as a key part to the team, he has showed glimpses but so far hasn't been consistent or IMHO good enough to hold down a regular starting slot.
Notice I said squad, not team. So for me a total of 29 appearances in all comps despite longish spells out through injury does indeed make him a key part of our successful 2015/16 squad. Especially as he was in such excellent form prior to the injury he incurred following his heroic winner against Sunderland which put him out early on in the season. He has his faults but deserves immense respect for his high energy, resolution and tenacity, all qualities that help lift those around him when the going gets tough.

For sure he's unlikely to be first choice next season but hopefully he'll continue to be one of the first Poch turns to when others get injured.

Is this you GB?

Does anyone genuinely think Drinkwater is better than Mason?

different positions/roles really so hard to compare but if Mason being a key part of the midfield which finished 5th is one of your go-to arguments for him in a positive sense then Drinkwater being a key part of a title winning midfield should also count in his favor, no?

no need to take such an aggressive position Roy - people are entitled to their opinions and are free to discuss them here.

did anyone tell you to fudge off and support another team because you vocally disagreed with Poch rating Bentaleb or Rose a season or two back?

Mate talk some sense please. Quite simple support the team or don't bother dress it up how you want.

what is it i said that you disagree with?

people can disagree over a players ability or worth to the team whilst still being supportive of the team

There are players who will never be truly loved even if they scored a hat-trick against Chelsea or Arsenal... We've had quite a few over the years (Keane, Bent, Bentley etc.). I've always wondered about the deepness and analysability of statements such as 'not good enough' or 'crap', they tell you a lot, don't they?

My take on Mason is that he's a good pro. No real weaknesses, but no real strengths either and therein lies his problem. Mason does not look like the type of player who will impose himself on games. He has good moments, but he also disappears.
