Summer 2013 signings thread

Yeah, I say that in my own post. My point is that my hindsight, researching these guys personalities and backgrounds, should have been our clubs due diligence.

There is no way I'd have paid £17m for Paulinho knowing what I.know about his personality, his history of depression, his failure to make it in his first spell in Europe, his history of homesickness, the roles he had for Corinthians and Brazil.

I'd be interested in reading some of what you have uncovered about Paulinho's personality.

I must admit that at the time I found the supportive comments by pundits who follow South American football like Tim Vickery encouraging.

You started the Paulinho when his signing was confirmed; unless you can show posts in the early days saying similar doubts then i'm sorry your point is irrelevant. Perhaps the club DID find these things and thought he was still worth the punt. In fact in the first 2/3 months he looked worth the punt.

Definitely hindsight. From the little I have seen of Oscar and Willian they have played more intelligently and progressively for Cheat$ki than Lamela has for us. If I recall Lamela has been significantly responsible for a few goals - away against the Goons for example - something I don't recall from Oscar and Willian. I also don't recall seeing them dawdle on the ball as much as Lamela does. Neither has scored a Rabona in a competitive game though.

I agree that those players have done more for Chelsea than Lamela has for us. He is undoubtedly a signing that has not worked out for us so far. My point was that we paid about the going rate for an attacking player who is young and highly rated.

Well as I said, it should have been a transfer strategy that "did'nt" involve taking the huge risk of blowing £100m on 7 players who had never kicked a ball in english football. Thinking that 7 strangers to the premier league would work was ludicrous.

Are you seriously saying we could not have signed any players of similar quality who actualy had premier league experience ? Its not as if we got "bargains" by buying these players from abroad. Lamela ? Soldado ? Paulinho ? £70m just on those 3 which was blown.

All our big money (£10m+) signings from the EPL had/have flopped - Bent, Bentley, Keane II, Defoe II etc., so perhaps we thought we'd try something that had worked for us before (Berbatov, Modric, Verts, Lloris)?

Good point and well put. I think it's such a shame our recent signings haven't made a significant positive difference. Let's hope Poch can get a few in that he wants.

Thanks. It's not all bad, of the summer 2013 signings, Eriksen and Chadli have definitely proved good value for money and are worth more than we paid for them.

BTW, for those wanting alternatives to the players we bought, some players that moved to the Premiership that summer that went on to have good Premier League careers:

Paulinho £17m vs. Moussa Sissoko £2.5m
Etienne Capoue £10.5m vs. Victor Wanyama £12.5m
Erik Lamela £26m vs. Delofleu (spelling) - ok it was a loan for Everton but why didn't we just chuck a sh87-tonne of money at Barca that we saved on not buying Paulinho, Lamela and Soldado?
Roberto Soldado £26m vs. Wilfreid Bony £11m
Vlad Chiriches £8m vs. Not selling Caulker- you can't say he's any worse???

Great. How many people on here were calling for us to sign Sissoko or Wanyama at the time? It is easy to pick out successful signings after the event and argue we should have made them but that is not realistic.

And with Caulker, he would probably still be at the club if it was not for the off field stuff.

Some food for thought in hindsight no doubt; but Caulker??? Seriously?? He is potentially going to be relegated twice in successive seasons! Ask QPR or Cardiff fans if he is better than Vlad. He's FAR WORSE than Vlad!

WTF? Haven't I made the point that I was excited by the signings? How is me starting the thread relevant? I'm not a football scout or technical director or a head coach. I'm not paid to assess a players likelihood of succeeding in a foreign country in a high intensity and pace-driven league.

My point is you are doing the easy thing and pointing out a player's fault after the fact. For example, given the first 2 months of Paulinho's games with us were YOU saying it looked likely that Paulinho wouldn't succeed in this country?
If you weren't then at that time it looked a fair purchase. Things can change over time, and as i say perhaps the club HAD made these background checks and thought Paulinho would succeed. It's not like he was a dud from day one..

Even if you were, you would not get it right all of the time. We got some signings wrong, it happens to all clubs.

It's not realistic for me, but my point is that those players were more realistic and had better chances of being successful in this league:

*Players from Dutch football mostly do well in England, Bony also had the physical, mental and technical attributes to succeed.

*Sissoko as well, has everything going to succeed in English football, same with Wanyama. Wanyama also in Scotland, very similar culture and football style. You get the picture, need I go on?

It should be the easy thing for the club to do before hindsight is necessary. That's my point. I'd say if they did those checks and still sanctioned the deal, then that's as bad as the bankers!

Even if you were, you would not get it right all of the time. We got some signings wrong, it happens to all clubs.

Not 3 of the biggest signings in a clubs history in one summer and they are all failures and all have weak, shy personalities and all had high risk profiles of playing free roles or poachers roles in slow, latin leagues with no successful divergences from that football or lifestyle cultures. That's not chance, that's not just one of those things, that's rank bad management.

Let's step back a second. If Paulinho had scored from his ridiculously fluffed shot and that had won us the game would you be saying this?
If Paulinho (somehow) goes on a run of games scoring crucial goals to get us into a position whereby we go into the final round of games still in with a shout of 4th, would you still be saying this?
Honest question

What a ridiculous thing to say. I'll answer your question by saying that if I had the skill of Lionel Messi instead of being completely sh*t, I wouldn't be having this conversation with you now. I'd be wondering which page 3 girl to cheat on my wife with next and what the he'll I'm going to do with all the money Nike have just given me for agreeing to wear their new boots.

what happened i heard stuff about him insulting Levy's wife was that really true?

Summed up how I have felt but put better then I ever could.

Should be the footnote when talking about our summers transfer dealing of 2013
