Ryan Mason

Which central/deep playmaker is also a "crunching" tackler? Why is that something it's fair to expect?

He's a very good pass and move player, two footed and effective. He moves really well to get involved, can score and can in deed pick a telling attacking pass more often than most in our team. Defensively he seems to reliably get back into position, doesn't fall asleep and isn't afraid of a tackle. Again, what more is fair to expect from a 23 year old whose primarily a ball player having made 5 PL appearances?

Been very much needed this season after we failed to secure a ball playing midfielder in the transfer market and Bentaleb has been performing a bit worse than last season and now been injured.

He looks to me now to be a cross between Gerrard and Modric (not as good yet) and he is exactly what we need and England need

If Stambouli is half the player we hope he is, him and mason could really complement each other

I am totally agree with you, we had not a suitable mid for EPL since we gave modric, huddelston and jenas. even both jenas and hudd weren`t brilliant but thye knew the secrets of EPL. mason has this and until we have a plyer with such passion and is suitable for EPL, mason should play every game.

We should be thinking that we can build a passing game around this guy. Pops it first time, can switch the play with either foot and is constantly probing and playing progressive passes. Add that to the fact that he gets around the pitch, puts his foot in and is constantly running in between lines - I think so far he has looked top draw. If he had a name and big price tag then we would all be getting very excited.

To put into context - yesterday he was probably the best midfielder on show. A year ago he was playing for Swindon and doing well 'but we need to put him in perspective' - similarly cleverly was playing for utd and playing 10 for England.... Yes he's lost form recently but on the same pitch Mason did what Cleverly should be doing.... Goes to show that reputation and a bit of luck can go a long way!

IMO he is far ahead of Carroll and Bentelab and touch wood he stays fit as he is a very accomplished player who can do a good job for us!

Best suprise of the season for me, reminds me alot of Modric with the way he distributes the ball, the biggest question is who plays with him.Im still not convinced by Capoue.

In terms of ability or style of play? If you're talking about style of play what in particular do you think is missing from Mason's game?
Modric has a little burst of pace with the ball. When he sees space he pushes forward in to it, leaving a couple of players behind and then lays it off well. Dembele and Wheelchair do the same thing but without Modrics end product.

If Mason has this in his locker he would be more in Lukas mould.

he doesn't seem like modric to me. i wish he was, but i feel that his read of the game isn't on modric's level. even on tv, it was easy to see modric's pure level of class, from when he sold a dummy, to long driven passes up the pitch. to me, mason doesn't have that. this doesnt mean he isnt a good player, it's just for me he isn't like modric. I also think he's not for the deep 2 in CM, but he needs to be further forward. not sure how much physically he will develop further but for me i like a bit more athleticism there. I think as the third man in midfield, either from the left or as part of a 3 he will do best and shine, as his positional sense, incisive and creative passing, shooting ability and willingness to move to receive a pass will be more effective, but as a 2 i don't feel he can show his full potential at the moment,as he has a lot of defensive responsibilities that are hard for him to manage.

i understand he can put in a tackle, but he isnt sandro, for instance. more a scotty parker type -:) and also, we're supposed to be becoming a high tempo pressing team? that ability would still be useful a little further up.

Thought he showed some real signs of being capable of stuff like that against Villa. He has very good close control and isn't slow I think, fairly quick over short distances at least.

If he has been avoiding doing stuff like that frequently in first handful of games for us I can understand it.

I hope he does. I know that Bankrupt and WindyCoys rate him as a number 10 or AM. They have been raving about him for years. They know Spurs youth setup as well as most.

If he can be half of Luka I will be happy.

Compared to which Modric? The then 23 year old Modric (same age as Mason is now) who struggled to make an impact in a disorganized Ramos led Spurs team only to then be eased into life in the Premiership starting from the left? Or the 25-26 year old Modric who ran our midfield week in week out in the Premier League? Or the 28 year old Luka Modric who was the best central midfielder on the pitch in the Real - Bayern game last season with Alonso, Schweinsteiger etc also on the pitch?

A lot of what you're saying about Mason could quite easily have been said about Modric early days. His 5 starts for us in the league this season is his first taste of this level of first team football. Although some inconsistency is to be expected I would also say that it's fair to say that he will likely improve over the next couple of seasons. All probability would point towards him not reaching Luka's level of course. But I don't quite see how we can know that specific areas of his game like those you list will be missing a couple of years down the road.

style of play.

Mason from what i've seen has striking similarities to Adam lallana to me in how he plays. He runs like him and he passses like him (both prefer the hollywood pass when a simpler pass is sometimes better). Mason is nowhere near luka's level in terms of positional sense...not even close yet. I feel if Mason plays further forward he will perform just as well as lallana too.

I do not believe his style of play is like Luka's at all.

I actually think he reminds me more of Van der Vaart than of Modric. Modric would never have taken on that shot against Forest. Mason is a lot more forward thinking than Modders, but Modders was supremely intelligent both in terms of positioning himself on the pitch and in terms of choice of pass.

Top drawer, old bean - not top draw. ;)

I'm with you, though; I think he looks like a good player and although I like Thomas Carroll's composure and passing, I think physically Mason is better equipped.

P.S. Sorry about the spelling pedantry; at least you did not spell "reins" - things you use to steer a horse - as "reigns" - something a monarch does.
