Hugo Lloris

I don't understand the negativity towards Krul on this board. Thought he was fantastic this season, despite playing for a joke of a club.

I think he's been very average since his breakthrough, with little to his game other than the occasional wondersave.

How many years left on his contract? Think we'd get 30m+ for him especially after his performances in the World Cup so far. Hope it's all BS though.

No we wouldn't. We'd not even get half that.

Goalkeepers are always priced low. Remember we paid less than £8m for him when he was already one of the best in the world.

Only 4 GKs have ever been sold for more than £10m (Buffon, Neuer, de Gea and Peruzzi).

I'm well aware of that.

I was factoring in who was after him, PSG and the fact we clearly don't want to sell and have no need to. If he's still got a couple of years left on his contract I can see a huge bid needed to prize him away this summer. Next summer would be different though and we'd prob accept something like the numbers you're talking about.

As I recall, we paid £12 million for him.

The fact that we don't need to sell plus the fact that Daniel Levy is our chairman plus the fact that the likely buyers would be PSG means that, all things considered, I couldn't see him going for much less than £20m.

we paid over 10 mill iirc and if he was already one of the best in the world why was it that only Spurs were interested in buying him.

I dont agree with the way a lot gauge how good a player is by how many clubs are in for them. Of course it can be a rough guide, but firstly you have no idea who was interested in Lloris, despite media talk a lot happends that doesnt make the news and there are different levels of interest anyway.

We really needed a new no 1 keeper, other top teams who might have wanted Lloris could already have a good quality no1 and want to spend their budget on higher priorities, so whilst keeping tabs on his situation weren't as forward in making serious bids. That is just one of many possible scenarios.

There arent many better keepers than Hugo, regardless of who comes in for him....

PSG already have two excellent keepers. It's anything but a priority for them.

I think he'd also see a move to a weaker league as a backward step at this stag in his career.

£7.8m was the official figure we paid for Lloris IIRC.

Because you only need one top GK and that summer none of the other big boys were in the market for one. We were very lucky. Just like when we got Berbatov and Modric without there being competition from bigger clubs.

I wouldn't swap him for any other GK in the world. He's our best in nearly 40 years (since Jennings).

Berbatov was never regarded as world class at Leverkusen. There was potential there but enough doubts to stop the real top clubs from buying him.

Same with Modric. Too small, lightweight, unproven in a good league, only Saudi Sportswashing Machine were serious contenders for his signature

We gambled with them, with Lloris, with Eriksen, all highly thought of but eventually ignored by the top clubs, and we got lucky.

to complete the picture some others didn't go too well too. but that's part and parcel of "portfolio management" - players are investments in assets, we derive good money from player trading.

Or a Berbatov that had just been majestic in his teams run to the Champions League final :rio:

What, the 2002 CL final for Leverkusen against Madrid? He didn't even start the game, he wasn't even a regular at the time iirc.

He was so majestic that he refused to sign for Real, Barca, AcMilan, Bayern Munich etc and he thought no, I want to play for Tottenham Hotspur?

What exactly was the gamble regarding a proven CL performer, France captain with 50 odd caps?

You have to ask all the top clubs who looked but said no thanks to signing Hugo from Lyon. Something must have been missing.

Again this just goes back to my original post there are plenty of reasons why bigger clubs didnt want him at the time, none of them needed a top keeper at the time like GB said - you dont stock up on class GKs like you can outfield players. We simply got lucky, you still havent given an actual footballing reason as to why Lloris would have been a gamble. By your logic any player we ever sign would be a gamble because Real Madrid et al didn't sign them....
