Andros Townsend

Re: Official - Townsend

I think a lot of you are being harsh here.

I think some decent coaching would do the boy wonders, as would some consistency in where hes played.

It wont happen but id like tim to stick him on the left and tell him to stay wide. That way hes less likely to keep cutting in and taking pot shots.

Re: Official - Townsend

He really could go either way, he was garbage the other night but I think it's crazy to write him off. There were games earlier in the season where he was killing defenders for fun and he was actually playing some intelligent football, it's just a shame that all of the erratic crap stuff he did takes precedence. He's 22 but he's a very inexperienced 22yr old, maybe if he was 18 people would lay off him a bit. The raw ingredients are there, whether he puts it all together I don't know but it only takes a couple of good games to get a player going in the right direction, for now though he has to be content with a place on the bench and perform when he gets his minutes.

Re: Official - Townsend

he's young so we ought to give him a chance, but I do agree that we shouldn't be too reliant on him right now as he is still learning. problem with that is that lennon doesn't seem to be hitting form either.

Re: Official - Townsend

The thing that I find frustrating is that it should surely be straightforward to get him to shoot less? It was almost farcical against Dnipro.

I agree with this. There is a very good player in there who was given the key to the executive washroom and is desperately trying to hold onto it. At one point he looked a shoe in for the world cup squad but now that is all in doubt. When I watch him since his injury return he looks to me that he's forcing it in an effort to impress. He's looking for the highlight reel moment all the time which is basically poor decision making. He needs to reassess what he is doing and not go all 'Bentley' on it. Do the simple things well and work hard, a bit of a cliché but absolutely true.

The poor decision making aside his tracking back is shockingly bad. I might not have noticed this side of his game before as he was looking so bright going forward, but he needs to take a look at Lennon's defensive performances and use that as a benchmark for his own. This area of his game needs serious work.

Re: Official - Townsend

Townsend isn't 100%, working himself back to match fitness after injury.
Don't write off players that are in that situation, a player having a bad game or spell of games isn't necessarily a poor one.
Often players are building themselves up, or even playing through pain and/or injury.

Totally agree, prime example Danny Rose first few games back after his injury I thought he looked shocking and I was ****ging off his crossing. Last couple of games I think he has been fantastic and his crossing has improved.

Townsend needs a run in the side, but I'm not sure if he gonna get it

I was spitting feathers in pre season about Rose that match against Monaco was the worse i have seen a left back play. Just goes to show what a lack of match fitness can do. Huddlestone was another who took time to get up and going after an injury.

All that said it is an interesting time for townsend because he has to make the step up to the next level.

Re: Official - Townsend

What he's gonna need is the support of fans and not have people jump all over him every time he makes a mistake

Re: Official - Townsend

I think Townsend is too inconsistent to have any impact for us now. Also, he needs to concentrate more on creating chances for our attacks, rather than trying to score himself. He should avoid taking freekicks as well as he doesn't seems to be good at it. Still not convinced he will be a long term success for us.

I hope he gets a run in the side. And that that side is QPR!
Seriously, he wouldn't get near any of the present top 4 teams and it is those teams we are trying to catch.
Emperor's new clothes based on two good games for England.

And what did he do in order to get selected for those two good games for England?

Re: Official - Townsend

Built up a lot of hype in his loan spell at QPR. I didn't think he deserved to get called up at the time. He's probably among the top 10 English players for his position, but that doesn't mean he should even be in the PL.

Re: Official - Townsend

Absolutely agree, I just don't get what people see in Townsend. No goals, no assists, no product at all. Maybe you are right, he is playing within himself as he comes back from injury, but on this showing he is in the wrong league.

Re: Official - Townsend

Same as Wright-Phillips, Milner, Downing, Johnson, Walcott and Sterling before him. Not that much...

Edit: Probably getting selected for England in a non-vital game is probably a good sign that someone are or will be good enough to play regular PL football. It doesn't mean that they're good enough to be a regular starter for a team challenging for Europe.

Re: Official - Townsend

The same sort of thing Ricky Lambert did, presumably. Maybe we could sign him?
Occasionally players hit a purple patch and are rewarded with a chance in the national team. Townsend had played well for QPR, got his chance and played well in one game and ok in another. From that point on, the press went wild (as is their way) suggesting Townsend was the next big thing.
My view is that a lot of people at the Club were taken-in by the hype at that stage. Sure, everyone would have loved it if Andros had stepped in where Bale had left and filled the void, but in reality that was never going to happen.
For me, he lacks end product. He runs down blind alleys and, due to the fact that last season he hit a few long range wonder goals, he shoots far, far too often and rarely with any reward. He is, in my opinion (and whilst i am no better off in my view than others, i have at least been watching spurs for 30 years) he is a squad player for 6th to 9th placed premiership team or a first choice player in a bottom half team.
I always apply what i accept is a pretty crude test: which of the teams above us would have him in a squad of their best 22? I don't think it is controversial to say that none of the present top 4 would have him, and given we are trying to get into that top four, that is unlikely to happen if we are reliant on players in key positions who are less able than those in the same positions of the teams we are trying to catch.
I would say precisely the same about Rose.

Re: Official - Townsend

I pay no attention to what anyone on here writes when a player is in bad form. Instead, i look at the player ratings threads earlier this season when he was was constantly getting our motm awards (and that's by some of the same people who are now writing him off). Now apparently he's never been that good etc etc.

Re: Official - Townsend

I'm reading this nonsense even more now....looool oh man...he's not PL standard, should be playing for QPR, only 2 good games this season for England.

Please people....go back to a large chunk of our games earlier this season (either watch the game if you can or look at the player ratings threads). Numerous motm performances....all forgotten now and history is rewritten :ross:
