I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

Re: Official - Lamela

Will be an absolute joke if we get rid.

should be given a start this weekend.

Re: Official - Lamela

He needs a proper run of games, it's amazing what 4 or 5 consecutive matches can do for a players. This whole "okay you have the next 60 mins to prove yourself or you get to wait another month for your next chance" can put a great deal of pressure on a player, especially someone as young as Lamela.

I don't know how we fit him in though.

In place of whom? The two obvious positions he can play in Sherwood's team are currently occupied by Ade and Lennon who are probably the two best players so far under Sherwood. The lad clearly has talent but he has to earn his place in the team.

I would drop Soldado and play him in behind Ade if I was going to drop anyone.

I think that Soldado has looked pretty good of late (all bar putting the ball in the net). I'm also not sure that it would be good to change the front pairing when it is the only constant in a team that is being patched together game by game.

Re: Official - Lamela

So the reports suggest Juve are going to offer Vucinic and 5m. If they do they need to be told to jog on.

This will have made Levy's day. I'm sure he hasn't stop laughing since he read it.

Selling Lamela now before we can see what he can really do would be pretty stupid, but more than that it surely would undermine Baldini's credibility and maybe even make his position as DOF untenable. The kid obviously has massive potential and has shown it in Roma's colours. It's more circumstance that has meant we haven't seen what he can really do yet. IMO when he gets the chance he needs to keep it relatively simple, and get used to the pace of the league first rather than attempting to justify his price tag every time he gets possession. This is what happened to Bentley and no need to remind you that didn't end well. His performance in EL against Sheriff was his break through performance and one that should have a been used as a stepping stone to PL action. AVB mismanaged that situation entirely and wasted the chance to build the lads confidence.

Anyway one good performance in the PL will change his season IMO.

I think this is absolutely right, and it is matches such as Crystal Palace at home where we should be putting him on and letting him have a go.
I'd start him on the right in place of Lennon on Saturday.
Not saying Lennon should be dropped but there has to be a bit of rotation if you have £30m players on the bench.

...........Dembele....Sandro
Lamela...........................Eriksen
.............Ade........Soldado

Before people say 'no width' that is the job of overlapping LB/RB Walker and Rose to get forward. They are both perfectly capable of that.

Re: Official - Lamela

Got a bad feeling about this... sort of reminds me of Postiga. I really wanterd him to do well, but it just didn't work out. Remember following a match on teletext and going mental when he scored (either against liverpool or man c).

When you buy a young player for that kind of money you have to have a plan on how to integrate him both on and off field and (as others has pointed out) he has to get chances to prove him self, not just 10-15 min at the end of a game or against inferior opponents in EL.

Yeah, at least with Sherwood it seems like Lamela will be given a chance to earn his place in the team. Not obvious who he should replace immediately in the current system.

Swap Ade for Paulinho and that's the side I've been wanting to see all season.

Or Bale when Redknapp wanted to flog him to Nottingham Forest? Or Modric when he was getting overrun in the centre and got moved out to the left (more parallels with the other Erik actually)

GB your sloppiness with the facts impacts negatively on your credibility. I distinctly recall hearing Harry saying at the time he's going nowhere.

There is some right old rubbish talked about Gareth Bale’s time with me at Tottenham.
Was I ever going to sell Bale? No. Was I going to loan him? No. I’ve heard talk - everyone from Richard Keys to Alex McLeish - making it sound as if what happened to Bale’s career was a fluke and that I never fancied him.

Whatever faults I may have, I do know a player. Go right back to the first team I ever picked as Tottenham manager, against Arsenal on October 29, 2008, Bale was in it.

It’s true we had some work to do with him but he was one of the players I was most looking forward to working with when I went to Tottenham as manager. I really fancied my chances at getting the best out of him — he struck me as an exceptional talent: strong, quick, with a superb shot.

It upsets me that people believe I was ready to ditch him — although the story had been told so many times that maybe even Gareth thinks it is true. Alex McLeish says I was going to loan him to Birmingham City when he was their manager. Although I remember the conversation, it never got beyond the wait-and-see stage and would only have happened had I thought Bale couldn’t get enough matches with us.
Nottingham Forest wanted him on loan, too, with a view to a permanent transfer but I did not entertain that for a second. I would never sell Gareth. All he needed was to be toughened up to emerge as a star player.
We had to tease that combative streak out of him because, at that time, he was regarded as a left back and was up against Benoit Assou-Ekotto, one of the best in the Premier League. Gareth seemed too soft to be a defender so we decided to try him further forward.

Re: Official - Lamela

would like to hear baldini's views on lamela's situation

I'm pretty sure he knew he'd take six months to settle (Jason Burt has always said both Baldini and AVB acknowledged this before we signed him). The same thing happened when he first arrived in Italy from Argentina IIRC.

That's written a long time after the event by someone known for being economical with the truth, especially when it impacts upon his own PR.

But I'm saying I HEARD him at the time, and that these comments tend to back me up. Although I would have to concede that the colour of the sky can change dramatically when he looks back at with the benefit of hindsight.

Re: Official - Lamela

Is that from Harry's book? You know they stock it in the fiction section, right?

Then all these rumours are just hogwash...we should expect to see him in action especially with Defoe gone.

Soldado and lamela would be interesting. Too bad ade's been scoring loads lately (by our standards)

Re: Official - Lamela

I would drop Ade, a short term run of form doesn't make him the answer to our problems.

I had a feeling that Ade would come good this season but think a 9 rated performance from Ade = an 8 rated performance from Lamela with regard to their respective abilities.

if you drop Ade now he's going to throw a royal strop.
