I liked Erik Lamela before it was cool

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

You knows it.

I feel like he just needs to take a final step up in terms of belief and confidence, and then the goals will flow. Not that he isn't confident, because he gets involved in the team play and is willing to shoot, which is great to see. People should realise that he shoots a lot because he works the space for a shot well enough to go for it. Not any player can do that.

But I feel like he needs to take the step up from being 'Andros Townsend: getting a chance back from a loan spell and eager to impress' to 'Andros Townsend: top 4 player' because once that happens, he will be more productive in obvious terms. If he truly believes he is that player then he will truly believe he will score every time the ball leaves his boot but that will only come experience. Few players are there immediately. Bale had to work through the stages to where he is now, and Townsend will too.

His progression has been rapid though. He's already gone from random youngster on loan spells, to scoring in early round cup fixtures, to impressing in Europa league to being a Premier League regular. I totally think he can get there because he has the ****iness of a top player, it just needs to become intrinsic to him and I think it will. I think he will usurp Lennon, who won't suit our shape.

And that wil definitely come this season. He is young, impetuous and will make mistakes but it is how he learns from them going forward that will be the key.

A lot of people have slated him for always looking to fire a long ranger in once he gets a yard on a player and gradually he will realise that he doesn't need to do that (hopefully anyway!) and that experience will give cause for him to look for a pass more and more often and make the right decisions and get the balance right between threading the pass or cracking one from distance. I think Townsend can be a really big player for us this season, especially in games like Tuesday. People just need to give him a break and realise he is young and needs time playing for OUR first team before we assess whether he is good enough.

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

I can't believe Townsend is being criticized, he's been a breath of fresh air to our side so far this season. Very dynamic player and yet another good game for him yesterday.

what and assist to win it!

just look at the number of players closing him down and the tiniest of angles to get the ball to paulinho clear of the keeper.

It's amazing isn't it, Lennon is slated for not taking his man on and not shooting often enough but when someone comes in and does exactly that he gets the opposite treatment. The wild misses and dribbles into nowhere are always going to happen if he’s trying to do that - even Bale missed 10 long shots for every one he got in.

Now I’m not saying some of the criticism isn't valid, because he really does need to learn when to shoot, when to run at a defender and when to pass if he is going to hit the heights that we are eventually hope our first team will show, but it’s his first full PL season and that comes with experience which is precisely what he's getting through this run in the team. He's certainly young enough to make the most of it and evolve – you would think our fans have seen enough young players written off at the start of their career only to make it later on to start putting up with the rough patches a little better than this by now.

I'm just impressed that we have such a wealth of options on that right side, particularly after last season when we had no one at all to take Lennons place when he was injured; Lamela, Lennon and Townsend all offer something different to the side and all are quality players, watching them fight for a first team spot should be something we can all enjoy rather than solely concentrating on picking out and exaggerating their flaws.

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

he just skips around and makes it look so effortless, so easy. great movement from 1:13...

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

not only that he out-jumped the defender, he also had the awareness to direct the header towards Holtby and to immediately run down the channel in anticipation of receiving the ball from Holtby...its like he had a picture in his head of exactly what he wanted to do. impressive stuff

Same can be said about the attempted through ball for Walker that was only stopped by a hand ball and of course his delightful (although perhaps not sublime ;)) assist against Tromsø.

Great pieces of interplay that are really promising considering how early in his Spurs career it is. As he continues to develop an understanding with the rest of the players there's a good chance this will happen more frequently too.

I think he could become scary-good. Or ballachingly good :)

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

I saw him on Spurs tv, and I think I understand why he needs some time.

He looks very shy and he dont understand english or talk english...

But its not hard to see that he is growing in the spurs shirt.

Lamela seems to be weak in aerial duels in defensive duties. His strengths seems to be in dribbling, making through balls, key passes, long shots and passes.

I think Lamela needs to put up some weight. He looks very thin now. Maybe he will be more effective in winning headers and defensive duties if he is well built.

Funnily enough, I've been quite impressed with his defensive work, and aerially his header to Lewis against Cardiff was crucial.

Agree he needs to put on weight, but that's the case with very many players his age and it will come naturally over the next year or two.

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

i think Lamela can get stronger but he is no weakling right now. Reminds me of Bale at the same age tbh.

He is an Argie and they are as tough as old boots, plus he has already proved he can handle himself in a tough league like Serie A. If Lamela needs to build himself up what does that say about Eriksen:-"

Neither do you, it seems...

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

AvB and Freund will work wonders with this lad. He's clearly got great technical ability and it's just a case of him adapting to the premier league. Slowly but surely this boy will become a star. He'll ruin some teams when we dominate at home against weaker opposition.

Important point if Erik's the one we want to really replace Bale- I think Bale's starting point was similiar but hulking up helped his game massively. Maybe it can work for Lamela too.

Lets not pretend Bale wasnt a beast at 21!

His performance at the San Siro was amazing

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

In fact that gif for me makes him look ridiculously shy. Wait until everyone leaves then sort of half **** it

He looks like someone to me who has ALOT to say but just doesnt want to, like everytime he got fouled against Villa or linesman made a wrong decision, you could see Lamela wanted to say something but just not doing so.

Re: Erik Lamela - Official

I don't think he needs to build himself up as massively as Bale, who said that he gained too much muscle for a while and it actually impacted his pace. However, Lamela's a bit too lanky to go the Messi/Aguero Argentine route where they have massive legs and low centers of gravity, so I think he should look to Ronaldo, who had a pretty similar build as a teenager and the same kind of "dancing" style on the ball. Ronaldo has built himself up into an athletic GHod who has remained insanely fast and agile while having just enough strength to brush off challenges, though you hear his work ethic re: his body is pretty insane so Lamela has to be really committed.
