Gareth Bale

Do I think he could get there? Unlikely, but that's saying more about the quality of Ronaldo and Messi than Bale. It's a possibility though.

The problem is he will be expected to be there now because of the fee, and he isn't.

I put him on the Van Persie/Ribery level. Exceptional players, but still some distance off Messi and Ronaldo

I agree with this assessment. Bale is good at the RVP/Ribery level and could get better. We can only wait and see. Playing for Real Madrid will have its challenges (pressure, sharing the limelight with Ronaldo et al), but also opportunities (better creativity, more freedom because defences have other concerns).

For all the posters ****ging him off for not turning up for training when it was obvious that he was going to leave, shame on you. If you were on the verge of a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity like that, you wouldn't have gotten out of bed for fear of falling down the stairs.

I don't think he has handled it too badly. A little disrespect to his team-mates at the end, but is it worse than behaviour by a club legend like Gerrard who was forgiven. Rooney and Suarez will also be forgiven for far more disrespectful behaviour.

In general, I wish him well. Certainly well enough to fend off a return to the PL. The fee has allowed us to buy extensively, so we should be able to adjust in a way that we couldn't whem Carrick, Berbatov and Modric left. The loss today was disappointing, but we clearly have that #10 spot to sort out. Wenger is right about the difficulty of too many changes at once, but we still dominated possession against an Arsenal side (an achievement), while falling short with a new team. Our starts over the last couple of seasons while having star players holding out have being far worse, so we enter the 35 game season better off.

Ozil off to Arsenal according to reports in spain. 45m Euro. Turned down PSG apparently.

Could this day get any worses?

This would really really suck and take away some of the positives. However, previous reports suggest it is unlikely. I'm hoping today's win will convince Wenger he has what he needs.

True. However, it also meant that Bale could, in effect, do what he wanted. He could take shots from everywhere, even when other players were in better positions and have that tolerated from the fans, players and manager because he was by far our best player, most likely to score and most of us didn't care if he took a shot rather than passed it to Defoe or Adebayor.

How is that going to go at Real? What are Ronaldo, Isco, Benzema et al going to be saying and doing when he takes 10 shots per game while they're placed in a better position?

In reality, we can't tell how he'll do at Real. He has shown an incredible amount of desire to improve. But he's going from somewhere where he's loved to the lion's den. The same fans who booed Ronaldo last season. But Ronaldo had put in 3 exceptional, world class seasons before moving to Real and was a Ballon d'or winner. Bale has had this kind of level for 2/3 of a season.

I hope for his sake he hits the ground running.

I hope so too. I think the treatment that Bale received from refs last season was nothing short of disgraceful. He'll have a much easier time in Spain for sure.

Best of luck to the guy. I hope he ends up having an amazing career (and the rest of that lot suffer from career-ending STDs)

His agents confirmed Levy "kept his word" whatever that means.. That he was the most difficult chairman to negotiate with, would not confirm a world record fee.. And even joked that he had issues with "premature erections" All in all very bizarre..

SSN interview with Bale agents - Confirmed negotiations started 110 days ago... Missing champions league place was an issue. Press release took 2 hours to negotiate. Medical still not done. One agent said he loves Levy, other said he is hard hard work..

Bale looking forward to playing with Ronaldo, admires him very much blah blah..

According to BBC earlier Levy had or was trying to put in a clause to the effect that RM have to pay us £10million if they sell Bale to a Prem team in the next four seasons.

hope this in there, cos I can see him being a one season wonder and coming home

That was May 14th so Real Madrid and Barnett started putting the pressure on in the weeks build up to that final game against Sunderland........real nice touch.

Best of luck to him but I think that he might find it hard work with all the overbearing personalities at Madrid and the over fickle fans. Just hope that if he leaves them at some point in the next 3-4 years that it is to someone like Bayern or PSG rather than coming back and joining the likes of Chelsea. I could deal with him playing for Man U and City but the thought of him ever playing for Chelsea would just ruin it for me.

I know it's highly unlikely but how good would it be if we qualified for next season's CL and Real Madrid didn't?

In my mind, he was gone a long time ago. I think by the end of July, it was more likely he'd be gone than not. Is Bale really worth the 86m? RM was willing to pay that much for a player, which is simply too good to turn down. That's STUPID money, especially for a player that I never thought was worth more than 60-70m pounds. Of course it's a great statement to keep hold of your best players, but when someone offers more than what a player is worth, and in fact the world's most expensive ****ing player. It was great watching him play for us, we'll miss him for sure but he's essentially funded a massive improvement on our squad. Even when things didn't go our way today, I'm still optimistic about the season. IMO, we need to be patient with these new signings. Can't expect them to have the same impact Bale had immediately.

The only thing that will heal this is time.

I accept that he is gone and pretty much accepted it weeks ago but it really is the way we have had to put up with daily 'let him go' pleas from the media and even worse, the fact it was announced after we lost to ****nal before they buy Ozil just to rub it in our noses even more.

Sadly the only way we can judge this is by looking back on it in a year or two.
