John McDermott on Eurofoot
John McDermott was delighted with our Academy squad’s attitude and application on their way to third place in the Eurofoot Tournament.
Having qualified for the semi-finals without conceding a goal in five group matches, the lads lost a penalty shoot-out against West Ham before recovering to take third with a 2-0 win over Anderlecht.
Danish side FC Nordsjaelland – a team the lads hammered 4-0 in the group stages – went on to beat West Ham in the final.
Academy Manager John reported: “The Eurofoot is an incredibly tough tournament, a really good pre-season session for us with two games on the Friday, three on the Saturday and if you qualify for the semi-finals, another two on Sunday.
“In terms of preparation, it’s ideal and it’s a real test of character and ability. It ticks a lot of boxes.
“In terms of how we did, we suffered a couple of unfortunate injuries early on, Joe Pritchard and Luke Campbell-Young, so we were down to 14 outfield players and that increased the load on the other players, so I was really pleased with how we dealt with that physically.
“We had five clean sheets in a row, fantastic, but we were a little hit and miss in front of goal and that proved our downfall in the end.
“We had two Under-16 central defenders (Cameron Carter-Vickers, Chris Maghoma) who I was pleased with, Filip Lesniak and Alex McQueen had outstanding tournaments, Luke McGee was goalkeeper of the tournament, so they were all positives.
“We ended up losing to West Ham in what turned out to be a bizarre penalty shoot-out as Harry Voss dislocated his shoulder, we’d made four substitutions, so Connor Ogilvie had to go in goal. He did his best, but that tipped the scales West Ham’s way and we lost 5-4. Harry was okay, the shoulder popped back in and he was in and out of hospital inside two hours.
“That loss was a real downer, but I thought we showed real resilience to come back and win the third/fourth play-off game against Anderlecht, a very good technical side.
“Overall, it was an excellent tournament for us and just a shame that the smaller margins went against us. Hopefully, it will strengthen us for the start of the season.”

Bongani Khumalo's dramatic 89th-minute header saw Doncaster through to the second round of the Capital One Cup with a narrow win over Rochdale.
Rovers striker Chris Brown saw a header cannon off the crossbar, before Dale keeper Josh Lillis denied a stunning drive from James Coppinger.
For Dale, Matt Lund twice went close with curling efforts.
But Tottenham loanee Khumalo headed in his first goal for Doncaster from David Cotterill's free-kick for victory.

Our Spurs XI team take on Cambridge City FC in a friendly at Histon FC tonight (Wednesday, August 7).
It's the development squad's final preparation before the start of the Barclays U21 Premier League and an intriguing opener against Chelsea at Aldershot Town on Friday night.
Having beaten Kingstonian and lost at MK Dons, the squad now face the Calor (Southern) League Premier Division side in a friendly that doubles up as a Testimonial for long-serving City manager Gary Roberts and player Lee Chaffey.
City now play at Histon's Glass World Stadium and kick-off is 7.45pm.
Chris Ramsey, our Senior Professional Phase Coach, said: "We're coming to the end of pre-season now and at this stage, it's all about the final touches, players gelling and getting things right for the start of the season.
"At the same time, it's also nice to be able to show respect to people who have had longevity in the game. I remember Gary Roberts during his days at Brentford, a creative player, good on the ball and well respected in the game."

RAMSEY ON CHELSEA:
The lads return to competitive football in the Barclays U21 Premier League with an intriguing opener against Chelsea at Aldershot’s Rec Ground tonight, kick-off 7.05pm.
The league has a different format in 2013-14 with one division of 22, with teams playing each other once (either home or away) for a total of 21 matches. The top four progress to play-offs in April and May.
The team swept all before them in 2012-13 and won both stages of the league on their way to the play-offs, scoring an incredible 82 goals in 28 matches.
Unfortunately, after leading 2-0 at half-time, they lost the play-off final against Manchester United, who came back to win 3-2 at Old Trafford.
"First and foremost I’m hoping we can perform like we did last season and that will then help the players get to the next level,” said Chris, our Senior Professional Phase Coach.
“That will bring attention to their performances and hopefully that will mean some of these players will progress in the same way as a number of players did last season.
“They know competition at Spurs is massive and a lot of players have to go and have a career (on loan) before a career here.
“As we’ve seen, some players don’t have to do that and play here in the Europa League, but a number of players have gone away and played first team football on loan. The transition between the Academy and the next phase of their career has been very good.
“From the Academy’s point of view and for the philosophy of development, it helps when you play the way you want to play, and win, and score a lot of goals. You don’t get that very often. That happened on a consistent basis last season.
“Players went out on loan but other players came in, often younger players, and picked up the baton. To emulate that would be our ideal situation again, but one season to another is always different.”

He's played in every pre-season game so far plus most XI games. If he knows he wants to try out other midfielders tomorrow Tom might as well get a proper run out tonight. Also, it's not totally unknown for players to play 45 mins for U21 the day before a first XI game.
Tom will feature a lot in the first team squad. I think AVB rates him.

There's some real quality players in that lot.
Let's hope Spurs can pick-up where we left-off last season and win the U21 League Championship again.
