Roberto Soldado

This is my last post on the subject tonight as Mrs wants to watch a film.

I want to make it clear to everyone that I had to google what DDT meant. At the top it showed some kind of pesticide.. Surely I thought that was wrong, no way would KD be involved in pesticides... Looking further down the list it showed Wrestling moves The DDT.

Believe.. I didn't have a clue what it was. happy days all.

None of those quotes say bid rejected just that they want his buy out clause met and payment schedule in line with their requirements. Sounds like we are just negotiating.

You don't watch wrestling? that's shame. You would have been a big fan of an old school wrestler called 'Gangrel...he like you likes to gargle blood.

What about this scenario?

Joe Lewis sees that the only way to guarantee stadium rights is to be in the CL.
He understands that this would require an investment.
He sanctions an extra 40 million to be spent prudently by the current regime (DoF/manager) on top of the summer budget.
If we fail to qualify for the CL this season, and the books are way off, we still have the asset (s) to sell to re-balance 'the gamble'.
This is, essentially, a 'risk-free' window in terms of asset accumulation as we will retain an asset which could absolutely clear the decks next summer if necessary and if we need to do it.

;)

Hold on a minute. When I advocated just such a move in January and made exactly this argument, you said stadium not team first. What has changed?

BUT it seems that there is a bit of 'fact' flying around ie we will not spend £20m on a player (sorry Afrian) but that is gonad*s. We have already bid over £20m so that 'fact; already falls flat.

Agreed, african is wrong to state we won't spend £20m. I know where he is coming from; in the past we have signed younger players and don't like to spend big on older players, and have never spent anything like £25m... we all know that... but he cannot say we won't.

If Ronaldo suddenly fell out with Madrid and was available for £50m and £60k wages we'd spend £50m... it's all about value.

The thing that usually stops us is wages and that has hardly been mentioned. If Soldado's wages are £50k for 5 years that is 50k x 5yrs x 52=£13m over 5 years

If he wants £100k that is £26m over 5 years

That has WAY more impact than the initial fee being £22m or £24m or £26m.

Why the hell do people not talk about wages and concentrate on the headline fee!

What about the agent's cut? What about bonuses for goals or CL qualification? What about image rights and sponsorship deals? What about the low/high taxes in Spain being offset?

No, ignore all that and talk about either £20m or £24m. Sheesh.

Yeah I agree. I dont think its the fee that puts us off its the wages that the big players command hence the need for greater gate revenue which in turn will come from the larger stadium. Wages is the big indicator of whether we can afford him and if he is only going to command 3m a year then that is not much (to you and I it is but in the footballing sense - I bet Defoe earns that much). Oh dont also forget by bringing in someone on 3m a year and getting rid of someone like Ade... who may well be on 80k thats already a million a year saving which you add onto the fee and hey presto you got your transfer fee and why we can afford 25m and not just the 20m.

DHSF - finances are part and parcel of modern football and id say for any supporter who wants to have a real grasp of the club and where we can go/what our goals are etc it's important to have an understanding of the finances involved - there's enough info out there for anyone to make themselves aware if they want to do so. otherwise we'd all be sitting around permenantly tinkled that we aren't buying Messi and Ronaldo every window

Yeah it is I agree but I think there are two facets to the finances - there is the transfer fee (including the ancillary costs ie agent fees etc) then you have your wages. You can afford a 50k car but can you afford the running costs? We are focussing on the fee which I think is the wrong aspect to look at. Its his 3m a year wages which is a number we can afford very easily I think (if 3m is correct) and I think thats the reason we can afford the transfer

I think what stops us from buying the elite (except for the lack of CL) is the wages ie the running costs.

As mentioned to Bullet - no way would we keep Ade if we get in Soldado so not only are you saving £20k a week wages but also bringing in 5-7m - so the net outlay isnt as much as anyone would initially think ie 25m plus wages.

* all figures are plucked out of thin air

This. Also, if you don't try and understand the financial situation of the club, you have no basis to try and criticise those who are in control of it with the financial decisions they make.

of course wages are important - but they aren't really the topic of discussion, we'll have known in advance what his wages are and whether they are in our range or not before following up with a bid. it's the transfer fee which is the point of discussion as it's that which is the hold up at this point

Not necessarily the hold up. Valencia will only care about the fee, and will give press releases about it to save face "We will not let him go unless we get the full release fee" etc.

We will have assessed the whole package... we'd be happy to pay an extra £3m if we could wipe £4m off the wages and signing on fees and agent cut etc.

So if Valencia definitely want to say they got the whole EUR30m we might let them... but under the radar it might be EUR20m now with EUR4m later and EUR2m for this and that and a reduced fee for the agent to make it happen and a slight dip in add-ons and we agree to play Valencia next year pre-season and we give a car to the President's nephew and we buy everyone involved a nice pair of shoes and we get 2 weeks rent free accommodation at their hotel blah blah

Lets be honest in a market where Cavani went for 55m and Arsenal bid 40m for Suarez we're not gonna get much of a striker for 15-20m.

I have never, ever said 'stadium not team' first. Show me the post. It doesn't exist.

What I have said, with regards to our stadium, is that it isn't BIG ENOUGH to spend like people have been wanting for years. As for 'what's changed' I refer you to my earlier comments. we now have a DoF and manager/coach who work together and get on, are in congruence with the chairman and share a long-term vision for the club beyond their own specific tenures. Oh, January would also have been a ridiculous time to sell Bale. His value has soared, but more than anything, we need to do everything we can to keep players like this, thus why you are seeing him remain at the club for the coming season.

Sounds like its the traditional Spurs we'll pay you £2m now, £1m when he has scored 100 goals, and the other £27m in instalments over 50 years IF he develops the cure for cancer

Clearly he has a £30m release clause but to trigger it a club has to offer all the money up front. I seriously doubt we have that kind of cash so if Valencia won't budge, the transfer is a no go.

Release clause is £25.8m. Seems we've offered £22m + variables, Valencia's board have urged the president to accept but he says no. Now it's rumoured that Liverpool have met the release clause.
