Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

Re: AVB - Making Tottenham His Own

That wasn't what i was getting at.

Even if he had absolutely zero interest in the job he should have played it out for as long as he could. That way he could get Levy to agree to certain things that he may possibly have been reluctant to do so (ie bigger transfer budget etc etc).

It's a decent point mate, absolutely, but think of where AVB has come from and think also about his relationship with Levy (also his relative lack of experience).

AVB is a young, passionate coach who has a strong belief in principles and unity. He was fudged by CFC and I think he was very grateful that Levy came back for him (Levy wanted him a year earlier when it looked like Harry was a cert for England at the end of that season - there had been talk of AVB staying with Porto one more year and THEN coming to Spurs. It turned out that way time-wise obviously, but with a lot of twists). Levy and AVB both get on very well with regards to holding similar interests outside football (a passion for cars for example) so I think that AVB genuinely believes he has a good relationship with Levy and that the two are 'in concert' with regards to the immediate future. Time will tel if he has been naive...

Re: AVB - Making Tottenham His Own

There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Asking the chairman for reassurances about being supported in the transfer market (something our chairman has decided not do for a while now) is something AVB should be doing anyway but with this PSG interest he has leverage.

If AVB prefers staying with Spurs there's nothing wrong with him lying to Levy to indicate that he would be interested in leaving to leverage his position at Spurs?

Is it equally fine for Levy to outright lie to AVB to strengthen his position in their relationship?

and you think Levy hasn't played this sort of game before?

Re: AVB - Making Tottenham His Own

I don't know. You obviously think so, any examples?

Are you equally fine with those examples?

but there's nothing wrong with it. It's not as if he's trying to get a bigger contract for himself but simply get reassurances that he's able to be supported in the transfer window.

I'm not sure about that, I hope there's a level of trust between Levy and AVB. A level of trust that seems difficult to obtain if this kind of power play is the norm.

I hope I never have to work where you do. Leverage may be useful in business when dealing with competitors, sometimes even customers and suppliers, but internally in a company? No thanks. That's not a recipe for long-term success.

The relationship between the board and the top level of management is incredibly important - it should be close, honest and have very good communication. I can't see what the club gains from a situation like the one you describe and I really hope we haven't landed ourselves with another manager who acts in that way.

Re: AVB - Making Tottenham His Own

What quotes from AVB's mate in the press is it you're referring to? And what coyness from AVB?

Jason Burt is AVB's mate. I thought that had already been established, judging by the number of accurate AVB-related exclusives he's published over the last couple of years. As for AVB's coyness, again, comes from Burt and his story a few weeks ago claiming AVB felt frustrated, if I remember correctly.

Cheers, I hadn't picked up on Jason Burt being that close to AVB :) I suppose I'm a bit slow in the uptake and earning my name...

I don't think the article posted on the previous page indicated that AVB is putting pressure on Levy though. Unless you're saying that the entire interest from PSG is made up by Burt to help out AVB?

Re: AVB - Making Tottenham His Own

Must be stressful being Levy. Have to fight off attention on Bale, then AVB, and quickly make a marque signing to appease. No pressure.

Re: AVB - Making Tottenham His Own

Laudrup will probably go if it's true. What has he got to prove at Swansea? He's won a trophy for them, I suppose he could stay and try and get the likes of Lukes Moore far in the Europa League or he could get a brick load of money, manage the best team in France and try and help them to a Champions League trophy.

He has improved his CV. I don't think AVB has.

Re: AVB - Making Tottenham His Own

Really? What would success in a 3rd rate league managing a team on cheat mode do for his CV?

Even more pertinent is the question of how failure in such conditions (very possible with fickle, meddling owners) would affect it.

Never thought of that!

Re: AVB - Making Tottenham His Own

Lets be honest if Laudrup wasn't the player he was he would never be anywhere near the PSG job with what he's done as a Manager.
He'd be silly not to take the PSG job over staying at a club where he could only get 1 win with in his last ten games.

Every manager will get sacked. Even Mourinho.

The art is leaving at the right time or being Ranieri. It's not the right time for AVB.

but where and when did i state my working environment is like this?

another manager who acts this way? to me that shows he has the best interests of the club at heart. When you have a persistent offender (that's what Levy is btw...failed to back managers at crucial times) then you would obviously be fearful that he will do this again. You have to use any sort of leverage you have in order to back yourself. Anyway Levy is no saint, you talk about having a good working relationship but that doesn't stop Levy using underhand tactics to get his way (sounding out Ramos before Jol had gone)..i'm sure there's other examples.

In that case I don't know where you've got the impression from that this is how people who work together behave. Unless I've underestimated you and you're some kind of Machiavellian mastermind ;)

I can't think of many occasions when Levy's actively refused to buy decent players. He fortunately avoided 'Arry's "He's a good lad" policy which I'm sure we're all thankful for. He's also fallen short of some players who were either overpriced or out of our reach.

If Levy were trying to asset strip or wind the club down I could see your point, but when both the manager and the chairman have the same goals where's the point in underhand tactics?

Anyway Levy is no saint, you talk about having a good working relationship but that doesn't stop Levy using underhand tactics to get his way (sounding out Ramos before Jol had gone)..i'm sure there's other examples.

Your comparison is very different. If AVB really is looking for a better job then he's well within his rights to talk to another club (although I hope he doesn't). That very different to giving the impression of shopping around to try and strengthen a bargaining position (especially one that can't really be strengthened due to our limited resources).

Re: AVB - Making Tottenham His Own

All over French media outlets this evening psg made him number one target and more than willing to pay 10mill and have talked to him about prospect of going to Paris.

Re: AVB - Making Tottenham His Own

Julien Laurens ‏@LaurensJulien

More talks today between PSG ans Villas-Boas. AVB is definitely the priority now. £10M release clause obviously not a pb for PSG.
