Tottenham Hotspur v Wigan Athletic Match History 2005-2013 & OMT

ive never felt at any point this season that we were the 3rd/4th best side in the country, we aren't as good as either Arsenal or Chelsea. i said before the Arsenal game i thought we needed to win that and move 7 points in front of them to give ourselves any chance of seeing out the season in that position as we were always likely to drop a fair few points in our remaining games. when taking ours and Arsenal fixtures in to account was not as big of a lead as it seemed on paper. for those reasons should we fail to finish top 4 it wouldn't hit me as a failure or a disaster or whatever

Good post. And that point in particular is something I've said myself. Leads of 7,8 or 10pts (like last season) can be deceptive because of who you have played at that point and who you still have to come.

Even if we end up 5th, disappointing as it may be, it certainly would not be a disaster in my eyes. If you had offered me that pre-season, with a new manager in charge and no Modric, I would have bitten your arm off.
If you had offered me after the first 3 games with a new Manager, new system, no Modric or Van der Vaart, I'd have taken your leg as well

Yep and we are beating some good sides to 5th as well.
Liverpool were in a similar position to us at the start of the season.
Future looks bright for next season.... though if we can just nick 4th then the ramifications for the side that loses out - because of what they are used to - could be significant. Both Arsenal and Chelsea could be at a bit of a tipping point.

Heck, if we get third and the fourth place team doesnt make the play-off.... :D :D :D

Missing out on the CL doesn't really bother me. The money would be nice, but we're never going to win it. I like the Europa League (apart from the Thursday-Sunday schedule).

The one thing that really grates though is the thought of who we are missing out to. Two biggest groups of tacos in the league. Both clubs really needs to be knocked down a peg or two.

Here's another little stat. This is the list of fixtures in which Wigan have managed 2 or more goals this season (in reverse chronological order)

Tottenham (H) D 2-2
Saudi Sportswashing Machine (H) W 2-1
Reading (A) W 3-0
Southampton (H) D 2-2
Stoke (A) D 2-2
Sunderland (H) L 2-3
Aston Villa (A) W 3-0
QPR (H) 2-2
Reading (H) W 3-2
West Ham (H) W 2-1
Everton (H) D 2-2
Stoke (H) D 2-2
Southampton (A) W 2-0

Notice a certain bias? They have scored a grand total of 1 against the rest of the top 5 (in their 4-1 reverse v Chelsea). The stand-out draw with Everton was back in October.

Despite a lot of disappontment for many today, lets be honest if somebody had said last Saturday night you can have 4pts from your next 2 games, I think the majority (granted not everybody) would have taken it, and, despite what I heard a few fans said on the way out, there is no way I would have swopped the results the other way round either. I will remember last weeks win for a long long time.

If someone had told me we would lose one of our final 5 games I would have bet on it being this one. I'm far from confident in us doing the business against Chelsea, but we'll play a lot better than we did today.

I agree with you both.

Today we were poor, well mainly in the second half, it was truly horrible to watch but whilst it was frustrating you have to give some credit to Wigan their 3-5-2 was impossible to break down until we brought on Lennon and went with a 4-4-1-1. Overal we were very lucky to get a draw yet ironically were very unlucky to not win it right at the end, it was a yo-yo game in what has been for me a yo-yo season. One positive, another late goal, does show this team doesn't want to give up, even when it looks like its not going to be their day as it did towards the end of the game.

Said a similar thing to the Wigan fans at work. I was actually more confident of us beating Chelsea than I am Wigan (and still am), especially as they will have just played at United too, extra days rest for us too, plus we definitely seemed to raise our game against better oppostion.

I still think its AVB's destiny to be the man that finally gets us that elusive PL win at the Bridge too

We have picked up only 1 more point against the Bottom 3 teams in the league (W3/D2/L1) than we have against the Top 3 (W3/D1/L2), in keeping with the Spurs tradition for being a 'cup team' who can beat anyone on our day but are just as likely to slip up against teams we are expected to beat. Fingers crossed the players can put on a cup final winning performance at Stamford Bridge to erase today' disappointment from our memories!

Just seen the last ditch goalmouth scramble again on Football First. How near was Tommy to getting his haircut? Last ditch block by the Wigan defender, so so close

He hit the post with a free kick early in the first half too. Close to a close shave.

Not gutted by the result, shame we were so sloppy early, I think we missed Ade and his ability to drag defenders around/make space for others, there were frustrating moments for sure but this could yet prove a vital point gained at the death...

Steff, I love your optimism. It is always a wild ride loving Spurs and it's part of the deal.

COYS!!!!!

Praying for a Utd win today and it will (somehow) still be in our own hands with 4 games to play. Of course, they will probaly beat them with Utd putting in a "thinking of the beach" display.

Really annoyed with the performance and result. It is typical Spurs once again, failing to beat teams you are supposed to be beating. The fact we lost 1 and draw 1 against Wigan this season is really pathetic when all other top 5 teams had beaten them. Wish we had drawn with ManCity and beaten Wigan instead. By helping them win the league, ManU might take it easy against both our rivals for top 4, Arsenal and Chelsea. Other teams would always go on to win after scoring early but it is the oppositite for us. We always get complacent after scoring early goal. Atleast we managed to get the late equaliser. The 1 point earned might become valuable if our rivals drop points.

After the way we beat ManCity last week, thought we will have no problem beating Wigan. But we didn't even turn up apart from in patches. The fact we only made 3 shots on target is really poor. Apart from the 2 lucky goals, don't think we looked like scoring. Bale did well to force the goalie into panic and hit the ball straight at him which deflected into goal. We should have put pressure on the goalie from then on but instead we hardly tested the goalie after that. Credit to Bale for scoring his 19th league goal but wish he had scored another goal as well. Bale tends to go missing after scoring a goal and he did that again. Really disappointed Bale didn't make use of the freekick in the last minute as he is capable of scoring from that position. Very disappointed about Dempsey and Defoe as well. They wasted a few good chances to score. Defoe should have scored from the one-on-one chance in the first half as he could have took it first time instead of trying to round the goalie.

Our midfield were again a big letdown in this match, especially Hudd. He should have made use of this chance to prove his worth. Instead he was hardly in the match. After coming on to destroy ManCity last week, he hardly made any impact against the less established Wigan midfield. Maybe he is only effective coming on as a sub. Don't think we were effected by Dembele going off injured as he was poor until then as well. Even Holtby didn't impress when he came on. I think our midfield badly missed a fit Lennon in this match. Without his penetrating runs, our midfield were unable to create many chances. Even when he came in the second half, he couldn't do much as he seemed not fully fit. Wish AVB had brought on Sigurdsson instead as atleast he can score. Also, don't understand why we brought on BAE instead of someone like Carroll to improve our midfield.

It seems our defence is getting bad to worse all the time. It is unacceptable to concede 2 goals against a shyte team like Wigan. It seems we have to score atleast 3 goals to win matches as our defence are capable of conceding atleast 2 goals per match. Disappointingly, even Lloris and Vertonghen have started to make mistakes regularly now. Vertonghen should have done better with their first goal. And Lloris really should have reacted fast for their second goal. Not sure how a supposed top goalie like Lloris can completely miss the shot. At times he looked like Gomes as he was shakey dealing with crosses and shots. Still not convinced fully of Lloris as he has not helped us to keep many clean sheets since joining us. Hope AVB will do something about our leaky defence next season.

We should have continued the winning run after beating ManCity last week. It would have greatly helped us in the top 4 race. Instead, now we have to rely on Arsenal and Chelsea dropping points. We can only hope that the 1 point earned will help us somehow to finish in top 4.
