Andros Townsend

Well I guess we know already who the left sided forward is(!), plus who two of the midfielders are likely to be. I think to play 4-3-3 we'd need to get a goal-scoring midfielder to make sure we'd have enough goals in the team or, rather than sign someone, for AVB to be happy that Sigurdsson is up to the task. Would then leave us with:

----Bale------new CF-----Lennon

---[new mid]--Sandro---Dembele

back-up:

---Townsend-----Defoe----Dempsey-----

---Sigurdsson----Parker----[Thudd replacement]--

plus also have Holtby to throw into the mix (likely competing with Sigurddson).

The Thudd replacement would need to be someone who can keep the ball moving rather than a goalscorer or DM (akin to a Modric or Carroll style). I'm assuming Bad Ade leaves by the way

so after all bale has done you would move him out to a wider position than he is in now?

how come? what about if we leave him where he is now and then buy a striker and a wing forward?

Really hope we dont 'cash him in' I think he could break into the 1st team next season. could save us quite a lot of money

Can't see him being first eleven unless we have some significant out in the summer. on the bench and as a rotation he'd be a good option though. Looks like he might need games to hit form though.

You can't leave him where he is if we move to a 4-3-3.. because you don't play someone in that position. He'd either be the CF or one of the wide forwards.

Bale on the RIGHT is simply the wrong option - cutting in or not - as it completely nullifies his strengths.

Out of curiosity, did you have a similar response to him being moved more centrally away from his left wing role?

The comparison with Hulk is not that far fetched, neither is the comparison with Ronaldo who plays almost exclusively in a role cutting in from the left. Bale also has played that role for Wales, I think it seems fairly reasonable to think that they would utilize their one star player in a role that suits him.

Initially yes when, like everyone else, we could see it wasn't working. Then he had a good game against Norwich around Xmas 2011 and I said it was an option we should like into.

However, on the right he is hapless.

Which strengths does it nullify?

Can you elaborate?

I will reply to you something you have failed to do for me on 3/4 separate occasions in various threads.

Have you seen his crosses from the left? Whipped in world class crosses. Now have you seen his crosses from the right? Whipped in with the outside of his left foot? It's ridiculous! Yes, Defoe could and should have buried one of those crosses recently but on the right he is not effective and it's not hard to see why.

You don't see any similarities with your opinion about him playing centrally then and him playing on the right now?

Huh? Not sure what that's about.

He wouldn't be on the right to cross the ball though, he would cut inside as we have often seen Lennon do. Lennon has gotten into a decent number of positions that would be wonderful to shoot from, but he's on his left foot which is not as good as his right. It would nullify Bale's crossing from the left yes, but it's not like we have players who take advantage of his crossing currently.

Edited: for clarity.

Lol no none whatsoever. Are you saying he will do what he's done for us on the left and centrally out on the right in future????

His crossing with his right foot from the left is no worse than his shooting with his right foot when cutting in from the left. Goalscoring has become his new main objective, not delivering pin point sweet crosses that our strikers don't get onto anyway.

He did whip in a cross from the right against Liverpool, ended up as a goal I believe. Pretty decent cross. It's not like you can't ever cross with your left foot from the right.

I just don't understand how you can be so bombastic about it being "simply the wrong option" and him being "hapless" on the right having been wrong about things working out for him centrally not that long ago and similar players working well in similar roles for different clubs.

Take your point and against some teams with a poor LB it might work better. However, playing our best player out of position just because we don't have the forwards to do their jobs and convert his crosses isn't the way forward IMO.

Brain eclipse run a poll. I'd wager the majority of fans wouldn't CHOOSE to play Bale on the right!!

No, granted. The way forward would be to buy forwards that can score, but it's not a luxury that we can have mid-season.

The most recent example of what Bale could do on the right was shown by our very own Andros Townsend against Wigan yesterday. Spent all game running past players and crossing with his right, or cutting in and taking shots from distance. Got free-kicks and corners a plenty, though Bale would attract more attention due to his 'status'.

I don't think it's something we should do every game. It's just an option. If you want three attacking mid players who can 'wander' or 'swap' or whatever then it's a string that would be nice to have.

Really? You're not jumping to conclusions again based on little evidence?

He won't do exactly the same as what he's done for us from the left if that's what you're asking, he won't be a pure winger going for crosses. But I think he can do for us from the right what Hulk did on the right for Porto, score goals. I also think he can do on the right much of what he has been doing centrally for us. It's not too dissimilar to Sigurdsson now doing from the left what he for Swansea (and at times us) did centrally.

He is an immense player and apart from a somewhat weak right foot (something I believe he's working on improving by the way) he's not a particularly limited player. He can flourish in several different roles and several different positions given some time, coaching, instructions and a team that functions around him. It not working out for him on the right in a couple of games when Redknapp moved him out there out of desperation as our entire team was struggling isn't enough to make a once and for all decision on him playing from the right.

I dont like him on the right either... but I admit that might just be because of a general, intangible sense that it's not his position. Same with Siggy on the left.

Saying that, I've always felt that he wasn't very effective at cutting inside from the right wing, in the way that Robben and co are. Not sure why. Then again this season he has certainly improved his shooting and his ability to create space to shoot, so maybe he'll be better on the right too.

Back on topic, Townsend's development is fantastic for us. A hard-working natural wide midfielder who is equally comfortable and natural and effective on either wing, and who would (I imagine) be content not being first-choice? Just what we've needed for about 300 years.

I'm fudging delighted the club isn't run based on a poll of what the fans want. I don't think that just because something is a majority opinion on here that it's somehow automatically right.

Once again, isn't this the exact same reaction at least some of the posters on here had to moving him more centrally? That would be playing him out of position and he was one of our best players then as well so that just wasn't a good idea.

You're underestimating Bale if you think he can't work in a role where he's cutting in from the right.

Difference is Townsend prefers playing on the right and is predominantly right footed. I agree it's an option we have to use which is great and he has definitely improved with his right foot, something I'd hoped would happen.

I'm glad your not running the team to be honest. Our best player out of position isn't what I'd want to see.

Lets leave it as I said above - its an option we can use if needed.
