Roberto De Zerbi *OFFICIAL*

I think that's fair, we don't really have creators. Savio can be if he's on the left but he alone isn't enough. Fernandes can contribute as well to this but again i wouldn't think it fair to put all the creation on his shoulders.

Ideally, Savio on the left, Fernandes in one of the CM berths + one of Kulu/Maddison in the middle (Simons as well in the long term) is a good mix of creation and ball playing. When we are Ble to out our a team something close to that then I think we will be very close to what De Zerbi is actually trying to achieve.

I do think that's why ending up missing out on Ndiaye was so costly. He could have covered the No 10 role for now whilst we wait for Kulu or Maddison to return.
I really like Ndiaye and think he would have been great but that happens
The issue I have is he players who can play there and he isn’t doing so
I think he sees Fernandes as a 10 and I think that limits him

I'm hoping he's only mentioning Fernandes as a 10 as he is trying to shoe horn him in and the proper 10s are unavailable. So its more " He CAN play there" rather than "He WILL play there". There is a bumpy road coming up when one of the true 10s is available and he has to choose 2 of Tonali, Bentancur and Fernandes.

I'm willing to have a look at Marmoush in the 10 but I don't really see him as a provider so I don't know if he solves the issue anymore than any other of our available options right now.

I think the provider thing may be less of an issue if we have someone for Marmoush to play off…. Like son did off Kane or llorente with Solanke doing the big guy role
And scoring goals opens up teams

I think that's the case. I also have the feeling that even if we had a 'proper' 10 available, RDZ might currently be inclined to pick Bentancur and Tonali ahead of Fernandes.

Trad tens. Maddison, Simons and LWB. Wide player comfortable in central roles. Kulusevski. Player who can play across the front line and do a job. Marmoush. Then you have players who could potentially operate in that role in an emergency. Getting Maddison fit and starting, getting Kulu back and gaining minutes will be critical in the coming games. We really need to ensure LWB gets some senior game time too.

Getting someone comfortable in the 10 role or a hybrid seems key to our success. I hope its Madders or Deki but I also think given injuries that might be more hope than reality, but lets see. I think LWB looked levels above in pre season, yeh yeh I know it was pre season.

With Richarlison telling RDZ he wanted to leave at the beginning of the summer and not wanting to sign a new contract, he should not have gone on the tour in the summer.

Should have stayed at home and sent Lankshear on the tour instead. At the very least he should have watched Lankshear on the tour and then made a decision about his future. I sill have faith in RDZ, but the Lankshear decision shows he is far from perfect. And then signing Mudryk simply makes me question his judgement even more

Something doesn't really add up with that, why given him the no.9 shirt also?

How so?

Pretty informative show about DeZerbi tactics.

Yeah. I didn’t find it particularly reassuring tbh.

Interesting aside on Poch being contacted by the club last season before we appointed RDZ, but not being open to a return at that point due to his WC commitments with the US. May well have been discussed in a different thread, but was news to me.

Interesting discussion.

RDZ has always been a tactically astute coach with the ability to adapt his system to the current trends.

The comments on the pod about working out ways for his forwards to operate in space aligns with the long balls he has Kinsky playing. Factor in the speed we now have up top (could also be a factor in moving on from Richy and Marmoush starting at CF over Solanke) this could be his method of keeping the opposition honest so they can’t press as aggressively as the current trend is, which we have struggled to deal with. Alternately it could put our forwards in a foot race with the oppo CBs, which you only need to win once per game to create a high % opportunity of scoring.

It’s going to be interesting to see how it all plays out but I expect to see a wrinkle in his tactics instead of simply applying them like-for-like from his BHA days.

The issue comes and I think Billy touched on it earlier that we are going to need to see almost career best seasons from alot of players if we are going to score enough goals this season

Best seasons

Maddison - 12 in league, 18 all comps
Kudus - 8 in PL, 14 all comps (actually did 11 in league for Ajax)
Savio - 9 in league, 11 all comps
Deki - 7 in PL, 10 all comps (did 8 in PL once as well)
Marmoush - 15 in league, 20 in all comps
Solanke - 19 in PL, 21 in all comps (actually did 29 in championship)
Xavi - 19 in league, 22 in all comps (best was in PSV, also did 10/11 in Germany)
Tel - 7 in league, 10 in all comps

That's 8 players proven to be able to do double figures in all comps, 3 at 15+

I think the goal scoring problem (in terms of player capability) is overstated, yes we don't have Kane and Son, but there is a lot of options to go around.

The system needs to create those chances in multiple areas, so that we can spread it around, not just one route to goal

Of course but respectfully Deki and Xavi are not going to have much impact this season.

Its likely a combination of Savio, Marmoush, Kudus and or Solanke.

I agree on a system maybe yielding goals absolutely but IMO on paper we look short.

didn't find it that insightful, basically came across as -> troupe/narrative, then some kind of "well not sure"

Apply to "can RDZ adjust", "will RDZ last more than 18 months", "is Spurs capable of playing RDZ ball", last example they basically stated the narrative and then almost reluctantly admitted no one had seen Spurs best 11 yet.

The only thing I think is worth digging into in some detail is the concept of

- Current meta in EPL is pretty much "upscale Pulis ball", simple/brutal/physical
- RDZ is much more complicated in model

Is the complication worth the risk, i.e. harder to implement, but does it have a higher upside?

Now lets look at PL

Maddison 12
Kudus 8
Savinho 2
Kulu 7
Marmoush 4
Solanke 19
Xavi 2
Tel 4
(Edit : might as well chuck Mudryk in with his 5)

So 2 double digit league seasons from our attackers. Solanke hasn't looked close to replicating that season since and Maddison on a recovery journey from injury.

You'd expect Marmoush to rack up a decent amount of goals, 10-15, but i wouldn't bet on any of the others beating those numbers, maybe Savinho can get 5 or 6 as a regular starter.

I don't think it's actually possible to overstate the issue with the lack of goal scorers in our squad currently.
