Levy's Plan

How long did you give Levy before you judged him? It was 2010 for me, I had my doubts before but 2010/11 confirmed it for me.

Now if you're talking in relation to todays result, then you can blame them indirectly because today was largely to do with De Zerbi who they appointed and his starting selection.

If its not today, what is that makes you think they are useless? I haven't decided either way yet as I need more time and evidence to come to a conclusion.

levy was a net positive for the club. Look where we were when he took over.

They sidelined him after the Europa league win and got rid of him shortly after.

It’s been a complete disaster since

Levy made us a fantastically well run financially sound business

But not a winning football club, he made compromises all the time

We needed it when he came in, but as the decades rolled on, now we have to win the shiny trophies!!

COYS!!!
We won two trophies in his time, which is about the average for this club's history.
Let's hope being run by 'football sheeple', bankrolled by financially naive Nepos, brings the shiny trophies.

It’s somewhat lower than usual since Spurs became a big club (I.e. since they have pretty much always been in the top division - only 1 season outside of it since 1950)

1950s; 1 trophy
1960s: 5
1970s: 3
1980s: 3
1990s: 2
2000s: 1
2010s: 0
2020s: 1 (so far).

Of course we won’t know until 25 years’ time, but I’d back us to win more than 2 trophies in the next quarter of a century.

So would i - due to the financial strength that we now enjoy. Which of course was not the case for the majority of the last 25 years.

And apart from in the 60s how many times did we put in a title challenge? How many times did we finish top four?

How many semi’s and finals did we reach in all of those decades?

And this is it really

Look we all know success is judged primarily on silverware, no one can deny that and on that metric Levy underperformed. But when you take that to one side, its absolutely undeniable that the club made HUGE strides forward both as a footballing entity and a commercial entity to which we are now seeing the benefits today. Highest league finish since 62-63 when we had not even been in the top 6 in the 10 years previous, top 4 seven times, seven Champions League Appearances, out of Europe only 6 times, only out of Europe once in the last 16 years. People will no doubt sneer at it, but its evidence of progression as a club who 10 years previously had one visit to the 2 round Europe to its record. He left us a much better club than the one he took over.

We challenged for the title in 1987 and finished in the top 4 on five occasions in that decade in addition to winning 3 trophies. We also reached numerous semi finals and finals.

We won two trophies in the 90s. We didn’t challenge for the title but we did also reach more than one semi final.

This is not remembered because finishing in the top 4 didn't mean anything back then. There was no CL place to be had for being 4th best team (not that English teams were even allowed in Europe for the majority of the 80s). This is why for me when people cream themselves about finishing in the top 4 in the modern era or playing in the CL it's such a disengerous take. Top 4 has only even been a thing since 2001/02 when the CL place for a 4th place was introduced coincidentally 1 year after ENIC bought the club.

So for all the lauding of ENIC and Levy it's circumstance just as much as any good operation that created this. None of our previous owners even including the useless Sugar never had a Top 4 finish to aim for as a legitimate means of improving the standing of the club. UEFA created that situation not Levy or ENIC.

Ah the famous 1987 season the season that the 5 year old me decided that I needed to pick a team to support … what the fùck was I thinking… little prìck 5 year old brain caused me decades of pain.

Anyway. We finished 3rd in that year. By the same token or understanding of title challenge we done that 3 times under Levy.

While finishing 4th or higher 7 times

Winning two cups,

reaching 7 finals and

reaching 16 semi finals.

You will have to go back to Fred Bearman who had 40 years in charge to beat that (including the only real glory years we had… the early 60s )

He also built arguably the worlds best stadium which will produce additional revenue streams for decades to come.

Cementing us as the 8th biggest club in the world in terms of revenue a place we have never been before (18th I believe we were before the Levy era- and 15th was the best we ever were pre Levy)

Surely finishing as high as you can is also a standard though
Absolutely but if you have a slightly more achievable target just out of your grasp thats a bit more motivating, it gives you something to reach for. Look at this season and the way the club has invested, the idea is that 5th place can get you CL so it's worth taking that risk to try and jump straight from 2x 17ths to a 5th place and a 5th place that actually gives you something tangible today when it didn't in Alan Sugar's time.

I get that in theory, but our league campaigns under Sugar were not not better because a lack of target such as European football (BTW this isnt a dig at him as I rated his recovery of us financially)

I thought he was a pretty awful owner and again someone who lacked football nous and ambition but we have to admit that his context was different to that of ENIC's. We can't say what he would or wouldn't have done if just finishing 4th would have added a considerable amount of money into the coffers. That might well have been a spark for him to work differently as it has gotten ENIC to this season.
