I agree with you on that point, there again, I generally feel that way when players get singled out and hammered. Criticism? Absolutely! But when it goes into the land of hyperbolic overdrive bashing, well, yeah, not for me...

He was making a general statement about overall mood towards the player. I agree with him. And I agree with what you said here.

Without wishing to relitigate his Spurs era, I think we can all agree he was often harshly treated by refs. As odd as it was to see him marauding upfront late in games last season, his last gasp equalizers kept us up. He was great when we won the Europa League. I wish him well.
 
Il try and remember Romero for the good parts.

On his day a top level player and as good as King, Vertonghen, Alderwireld. He was unbelievable in the Europa League run and put in a genuine perfect performance in the final. As much as we all love Sonny, Romero was really the captain that day.

As an ex-CB who learned the game in the late 70s and 80’s I think this is the main reason why I like Romero so much.

CBs should have a mean streak in them, and they don’t get much meaner than Cuti. But he’s a little different in that he’s an assassin who explodes into tackles when he’s been quiet all game rather than a shouty, big unit who repeatedly plows through CFs in the air.

Can a CB be classed as a maverick?

Same, not in same era but same feeling

Growing up and watching Spurs play United I loved Keane and rated him, despite everyone round me always saying he was sh1t and just a thug etc.

Ive always felt you need one of those players, I think Spurs fans like the idea of it rather than the reality of it.

Give me a Keane, Ramos, Romero, Montero, Simeone, Davids any day

Anyone that says Keane was brick and just a thug knows fudge all about football and isn't worth listening to.

I don’t think he was harshly treated by the officials Steff, but that’s ok, we can agree to disagree. As I’ve said before, I think Romero cannot blame anyone but himself for the reputation he earned as a dirty player. He was very handy going forward and a top footballer id definitely agree with that.

6 red cards during his time with us. More than any other PL player during that period of time, according to today’s View From the Lane.

Regardless, I will always have fond memories of a true talent and a maverick who made the game more interesting to watch.
