Lucas Bergvall

I'm not sure why Gallagher gets so much hate, he was key to us staying up and despite a rough start put his head down and worked

The type of attitude we missed / need
Because:

1. He isn't 18-21 years old and people massively overrate players who are this old because they think every one of them will improve with a linear trajectory as only a few young players do.
2. He is English and not foreign.
3. He came through the Chelsea academy and was said to be a supporter of that club.

It’s fair that Gallagher was the wrong profile of player that we needed. But it’s unrealistic to sell him anytime soon.

De Zerbi has it spot on IMO, and not a case of him just wanting to get rid of young players:

‘I would like that he stays with us,’ De Zerbi said of Bergvall. ‘I think he’s potentially a top, top, top player. But then I don’t want to convince anyone to stay. Tottenham is already, without me, a top club and we are not to convince anyone to stay. He can find the space if he stays with us.

‘The competition within the players will be very strong because we are Tottenham and we have to build a strong squad – not just 11 players, especially considering a lot of injuries we suffered in the last two, three seasons. Football is going in a clear direction.

'To compete for the highest places in the table, you have to manage 22, 23, 24 players. I don’t want 24, but 21, 22, of a high level, for sure. I was speaking with him before the end of the last season, and during the World Cup two times, but now we are speaking better, face to face, without a competition in this moment.

4. He doesn’t play sexy football

As someone who struggles to warm to him, for me it’s none of those - I think there’s something about his footballing aesthetic/style that’s off putting. The opposite of elegance.

If he turns out to be a good player for us though I’m sure I’ll manage to overcome that!

I think he can be effective in certain systems where his attributes are maximized, such as at Palace and Chelsea, but we all saw last year that he is a limited player when not played according to his strengths. And his strengths aren’t particularly easy on the eye.
