Cristian Romero

Surely going by how much we spent on Van Hecke who had less than a year left on his contract tells you the going rate for a CB these days. He is classed as one of our key players and is also our captain. Although i don’t rate him myself, £40m fee is low.
Sure, but the issue is, is there anyone who has money that actually wants him. We might think he's worth £60m but if no buyer wants him at that price who are we selling him to?

With Van Hecke we actively wanted him and Brighton were willing to sell at a certain price. It's a different proposition. If Real Madrid decide they want Romero then the conversation changes.

Before Vuskovic went, Romero was the clear sacrificial piece, especially since he doesn't seem to want to be here.

Problem for him is, no one wants him enough to pay our asking price, yet.

He's at the World Cup so maybe things will change when he's back. But if it continues in this way where no one seems to want to move on the guy, then the question arises - do we keep him? He's still got 3 years on his deal. In his prime, technically.

And if we keep him, how do we manage the embarrassment of riches that is a center back pool of van Hecke, van de Ven, Romero, Senesi and Danso, not to mention the younger lads like Phillips, Takai et al?

I don't think you can keep him, the squad numbers just don't add up IMO. If rumours are true and we are looking at spending another 200m on players we will also need the dosh me thinks.

I don't think you want him round the squad either, first sign of issues he will be tweeting again.

I think the club would entertain lower bids just to move him on.

If we got 80/90 million for him and Vuskovic and both had sell ons, that's not terrible

I think we will have to settle for a paper profit and work hard to get him the move he wants to Spain or Italy. Sadly (IMO anyway) I don't think he will ever get reffed properly in the Prem again. It feels like he cooked his goose with that travel stuff at the end of the season.

he can play at DM so fernandes and possible tonali can focus on playing hoddle and pirlo without fear

Could Man Utd be the surprise club here?

I don't really find their current centre halves that convincing. Yoro is clearly the up and coming centre half. Maguire and De-Ligt the orthodox ones whilst Martinez is short but a good player.

Utd have CL and are on the incline. They would pay Romero a ton of money in salary.

Hmmm... 🧐

I could see Athleti after selling Alvarez putting in a decent bid, issue is it will probably be later in window
I think he’s perfect for Mou @ RM. They badly need better CBs.

Agree about he’ll be better in the Spanish or Italian leagues. In the PL there are no “gimme” games where you can just turn up, go through the motions and very probably win. He is very good at turning it on for the big games but his main issue has been consistency.

There are no gimmie games in La Liga either.

There's some sense in this. There were moments last season where he got a booking or dismissal for something that another player without the reputational baggage would not have got. He's seen, rightly and wrongly as a thug, and that impacts his ability to play for us.

I gather he wants to stay now, for what it's worth.

But there is undoubtedly a larger gap between the top teams and the bottom ones than in the PL. Same in all of the other major European leagues.
You say this but the gap in points between the top of La Liga and the bottom was exactly the same as in the PL.
