Politics, politics, politics (so long and thanks for all the fish)

How are you determining tax equality?

I didn't actually say that but people in Europe on say £25K will pay a lot more tax than someone on that salary in the UK plus higher earners pay something similar to here so overall there's a higher tax take so benefits and services can be improved (or better funded is a more accurate way of looking at it).

Yep. If you look at the US the top 1% pay over 40% of the tax recieved even though they pay a lower tax rate. In the UK its around 30% but they are taxed at a much higher percentage. Thats even when you factor on most people in the US pay an additional state taxes.

The issue is not that the UK is not taxing wealthy people enough it’s that they don’t have enough super wealthy people.

What a bell end conclusion

Obviously has no insight into football fan culture.....this is literally what all fans do, no matter where they are, for their club or country.

I mean being in South London when the Windies won the T20 World Cup and they were out in force. Been to many a Cricket match where the Indians made it into a festival.

Not sure why so many politicians now make this stuff so hateful

Luckily Norman Tebbitt isn't around to hear you!

I just went to that tweeter's X profile - RestoreUK. Enough said.
(One more for the algorithm :( )

The thing is with Tebbits theory is it's so short sighted. My kids support England in cricket. I grew up supporting Pakistan and now I'm split. With the football team too.

Key thing with the cricket team was feeling like it's my team.

With Owais Shah and then Moeen and Rashid, British players of Pak origin my connections to the England team is stronger than my connection the Pak team. And with this team, I love Ben Stokes more than any player for any other country.

Tebbit didn't understand the time it takes for organic relationships to develop between immigrant fans and their host country's sports teams.

I remember when Brazil knocked England out of the 2002 (?) World Cup. Early morning kick-off but I went into work a bit later. Our "sandwich man" that came to the office was Brazilian and on that day he chose to come in wearing a Brazil football shirt.
Well, I refused to walk over to him to buy my sandwich that morning.
That told him!!
Bloody foreigners coming over here selling us sandwiches whilst wearing foreign football shirts.

I remember sitting at Edgbaston in 2000 for England V Pakistan and we were chanting Nasser is a P*ki, tra la la la. It wasn't lost on us that he is half Indian and not Pakistani at all. The England fans next to us took it in good spirit. Footy fans are just special
