Archie Gray

It’s been incredibly frustrating for I, and so many of us, that Archie Gray has not been starting in midfield. He has been a victim of his own willing mentality to play wherever selected and to give his best for the team.

Managers have almost used him as the sticky plaster to cover over missing cracks.

Now he has his real place in the team and I can’t see anyone replacing him. He is here to stay. He has ability and mentality ahead of his 20 years. And will surely be our captain soon as well as getting the England call up that he fully deserves.

Great performance tonight.

For me it shows the cowardice of our previous managers not playing him there. It's clear he is technically superb but bigger names got picked.

Now we need to put Bergvall back in when he is fit. Drop Sarr. I think Sarr is very good for us but I do think he is shocking at marking on set pieces.

I have being saying all season that this kid needs to play in central midfield. As a wingback/right back/centre defender he just does a job. But in central midfield it is obvious he was born to play there. In central midfield you see the best of him.

Ahead of Wharton and Anderson within 2 years

He's always had that composure and quick feet, but to me he's a) looking better and better physically (both speed and strength), and b) playing with more drive going forward. Love to see it.

Bumping this...I will ask the question again (this is from Dec)

I still think it's going to be a tough squad to make. The midfield options are Rice, Andersen, Hendo, Wharton, Scott, O'Reilly, Bellingham, Rogers, Foden, Mainoo, G-White.

For me, you have to take Rice, Andersen and Wharton in Gray's position. If you take Gray as a 4th specialist then you have to give up on the idea of pulling guys like Bellingham, Rogers and Foden back into the deeper midfield positions.

Then of course, there is the whole Hendo debate. As much as I feel that he has been the true long term England captain, I'm not sure he justifies his shirt as a player now. Without Hendo, Kane would really need to step up as a leader. He has never really done that with that armband on. That puts a lot of pressure on Rice and Pickford to lead on the pitch, especially if guys like Walker are now gone.

What will be intriguing is watching Gray vs Andersen at the weekend.

Unless he plays the rest of the season as a CM, leading us to a string of good results/performances i doubt he'd be in consideration for the national team

Might be a favoured option as he has the added quality of a utility player.

I'm with Bedford though....I'd rather none of our players head to the WC.
